About Malevolence

Malevolence is a 90s retro styled low-poly first person horror adventure.

Suddenly you wake up in an ancient castle, with no recollection of how you got there.
You heard rumors about this place, about dark rituals and the extraction of souls, how it is ruled by ancient evil and that nobody who set foot on the island has ever returned.

As you contemplate your fate, you refuse to abandon hope.
Certain that a way out must exist, you decide to explore the castle and do whatever necessary to find your way home...
  • Retro 3D graphics like in the good old days
  • Explore the castle and find its secrets
  • Survive traps, monster and the undead
  • Solve riddles and find hidden texts
  • Use the items within to help you find a way home
  • The entire castle is one open world, so there are no loading screens
Due to the engine used to develop this game being almost 20 years old, you will probably encounter various issues and some anti-virus software will flag it as a false positive. There is really nothing I can do about that. This game has been tested and does not include any malware. If the problem persists, please start the game with the "engine.exe" in the "bin" folder instead, perhaps using compatibility mode. I am sorry for the inconvenience and hope you will still find enjoyment within the halls of the castle. Sincerely, Ezekiel Rage, Developer

The game does not function properly. Out of the 4 times I have loaded it only one has worked properly. Everything from graphical issues, crashes, and game saves just not working. I wanted to like this game but I can barely play it.

I like the aesthetic. I love the sounds but that's where it ends. The save files do not save so when you re-enter the game your file is lost, forcing you to go from beggining. And when I quit the game it somehow made my monitor die giving me 'connect the HDMI to the monitor' message bouncing around. Luckily I got it dirt cheap but I still want my money back, oh well. Stay away from this.

Love watching the 90's intro video then it completely crashing the entire game bringing me back to the launcher. Tried multiple times to fix it, but then when I finally gave up and went to the discussion board, the dev is telling people to just refund it. I bought it in a bundle and want to keep the other games... guess I'm just SOL

Definitely a pretty odd game, but it feels genuinely very old school. Everything from the artstyle to the sound design to the jank menus is all very aesthetic. I didn't even really mind the one or two minor bugs I ran into, it kind of felt like part of the experience. I bought this at about $4USD and would say I had about an 8/10 experience considering this seems like a passion project. Nice job, dev!

Malevolence is a first-person horror adventure that deliberately recreates the atmosphere and design philosophy of classic 1990s PC horror games. Developed by ERMedia and published by Plug In Digital, the game drops players into a dark and isolated castle filled with hidden secrets, cryptic puzzles, deadly traps, and disturbing creatures. After awakening with no memory of how you arrived on the island, you are forced to slowly explore the massive fortress while uncovering fragments of a sinister mystery buried deep within its walls. Rather than relying on modern cinematic horror techniques, the game focuses almost entirely on atmosphere, exploration, and psychological unease, creating an experience that feels intentionally old-fashioned in both presentation and gameplay structure. The first thing that stands out about Malevolence is its retro visual style. The game embraces low-resolution textures, blocky architecture, and simplistic models that resemble early PC and PlayStation-era horror titles. Instead of trying to hide its technical simplicity, it uses these limitations to strengthen the unsettling atmosphere. The dark corridors, empty rooms, and primitive visuals create a str…
