About Betrayer

✦ AI summary

Explore a cursed 1604 Virginia colony drained of color and life, piecing together mysteries while battling corrupted Conquistadors and shadows using period weaponry and a novel stealth system. Switch between two distinct worlds, customize your arsenal and abilities with charms, and uncover the tragic fate of the settlers through open-ended exploration and discovery.

Betrayer is a first person action adventure game that takes you to the New World at the turn of the 17th century.

The year is 1604. You sailed from England expecting to join a struggling colony on the coast of Virginia. Instead, you find only ghosts and mysteries. What catastrophe blighted the land and drained it of color and life? Where are the settlers and tribes who lived here?

Clue by clue, you must piece together the story of what befell this doomed settlement and find a way to set things right. You will be hunted by corrupted Conquistadors and ravening shadows as you explore an expansive wilderness in order to trace the brief, tragic history of the colony and search for survivors.

Key Features

  • Explore large, open environments teeming with danger and discovery. Chart your own course in search of clues and treasures.
  • Switch between two distinct worlds featuring different enemies, obstacles, and threats.
  • Wield early 17th century weaponry including muskets, bows, crossbows, and tomahawks. Upgrade your arsenal by purchasing or finding faster, deadlier, longer-ranged weapons.
  • Charge headlong into battle with guns blazing or pick enemies off quietly. A novel, movement-based stealth system lets you hide in plain sight or use the wind to mask your footsteps.
  • Equip ability-enhancing Charms to complement your play style, granting anything from extra health to faster movement to improved stealth.
  • Play with the default visual style for maximum eeriness and tension or customize the color and contrast settings to suit your tastes.

Betrayer was a disappointment. I liked the weird B&W with red look, but the mechanics of the game sucked! The controls were so clunky making the game unenjoyable.

I like this game with its creepy atmosphere with these creepy monsters. I like this noir style where at first everything is black and white and then over time the game takes on colors. It reminds me of a similar game in the taco style where everything is black and white and then as you progress the game takes on colors.

Betrayer is a pretty solid attempt at a game that clearly had passion behind it, especially considering it feels like a small-team or almost solo-developed project. The game uses recognizable assets and systems, but still manages to create its own atmosphere through exploration and combat. On the harder settings, the gameplay can actually be challenging, though experienced players will probably adapt quickly since the mechanics are intuitive and the game doesn’t constantly hold your hand. ⚔️👻 The biggest issue for me is the heavy red/monochrome visual filter. I understand it was meant to give the game a unique horror identity, but instead it hurts immersion and visual clarity more than it helps. Ironically, I’ve felt more tension playing Freddy Fazbear’s Pizza games than here. 😅 The challenges are mostly fair and not too tedious, except for the “kill 1000 enemies” achievement when maps barely spawn enough enemies to make it enjoyable. The soundtrack is also almost nonexistent, which sometimes makes the world feel emptier than intended. 🎧 That said, the story is surprisingly well thought out, the atmosphere works, and the game delivers what it promises. For the price, it…

This game is very intentional and beautiful. I thought it was a little too simple at first but the small skirmishes you have become a little bit harder over time and challenge you just the right amount. The extras are just enough to allow more game play but no disinterest. Highly recommend.
