Geneforge 1 - Mutagen

something interesting about this remake, the first game has that vintage charm and a classic and a true masterpiece. from what I have seen thus far it maintains all the origin charm with better graphics and more modern interfaces. I personally would have like to see a Geneforge 6 but I can understand why the developers wanted to revitalize this classic. Would I recommend the remake or the original, that depends if you are looking to relive the nostalgia, this game is a true vintage masterpiece as its almost a quarter century old, but if you are looking for a more modern experience go with Mutagen, the price is well worth it as its a great game and will easily take 40+ hours to complete. I personally am on the fence but I grew up with games like Ultima I-VIII. I have played the original, so I will stick with the remake, but if I never played either I am not sure. One big difference is Leveling Creations, without having to worry about leveling creations you aren't faced with keeping your existing or trying new ones. I don't know which I prefer to be honest.

I first played Geneforge 1 in the late 00's. I remember being completely entranced by the universe that Spiderweb had created. More than fifteen years later the world of the Shapers is still one of the most unique settings I've encountered. I have enjoyed the entire series numerous times and this remaster is wonderful. I am very much excited for the rest of them. The story is incredible and the gameplay is brought up to Spiderweb's current standard. I would highly recommend the series to any lovers of fantasy.

This game shows some strange flaws, at times irritating ones, yet I recommend: I was entertained enough to finish it, with some degree of enthusiasm and curiosity still. Rather strange that a studio with a catalogue this size still can't manage a smart interface: 2 redundant buttons for Hot Spots inefficiency; inventory baked in 1957, with no QoL features, yet effort put into new asinine limitations; crippled remapping that defeats its purpose by excluding mouse and basic keys; etc... But the Save system is good and fit for purpose, notably as a workaround for the issues partly mentioned above and coming below. It only lacks the ability to save during a turn, mistakenly conflating turn-based movement with combat (not that combat ever justified disabling a Save menu.) Major flaws are at leas two: Firstly, mobs are as numerous, combat as frequent as in, say, an Infinity Engine title. Yet combat is turn-based. Adding oil to that dumpster fire, mobs often know where you are as soon as you enter a map, share the knowledge, and rush to you. Didn't finish yet but I can post the review already. Stay away from it! One of the worst game design I ever seen when it comes to combat (not mechanics but the enemies one encounters, their abilities and their sheer amount). I will update the review after finishing the game. I am honestly extremely disappointed because I really liked the Avadon saga.
