About Dement
The town of Wolfvale has many secrets. Located in a mountainous region of Washington, the people are generally pleasant and kind. However, in the small neighboring town of Quiet Mountain, a girl living with her father has seen what lies beneath the mask.
Lily.
She isn't popular at school. She doesn't have many friends. Her home is not as safe as a home should be, especially since her adopted older sibling Ash has moved out. Despite everything, she is a cheerful girl with an upbeat and caring personality. At least until she realized she is being followed - by an individual, and an organization. Perhaps the two are related? Lily can't say for certain, but she knows she isn't safe.
She is to move in with Ash in the friendly Twin Elms Apartments, seated on the edge of the town of Wolfvale. She visits often. She is unknowingly visited often.
In the woods of Quiet Mountain, the organization that is following her is sworn to defend against the darkness of these woods. It seeps into the lives of all who dwell within the towns of Quiet Mountain and Wolfvale. They can see a darkness growing around her.
The lone individual, Taylor, follows Lily as well... but for more nefarious purposes. Obsession. Desire. A want to belong in her life.
Lily is taken. The world is a darker place now, and the people are not as kind as they once were....
A mysterious book, a missing girl, and corrupted creatures all intertwine into a dark adventure to recover someone you love.
In a world twisted by unknown forces, reality is only what you perceive it to be.

I wanted to like this. I liked Organ Quarter, and this is a very similar game. In fact, much about the technical presentation is superior. Level design is more detailed, gameplay mechanics more complex, overall more polished in most respects and less janky. However, what the devs of Dement do not understand that the devs of Organ Quarter (Outer Brain) do, is that horror games exist to be scary above and before anything else. Frustration isn't scary. It's the furthest emotion from fear, and the one which does the most to make a player feel fed up and put a game down for good. Some level of challenge is good to ensure the threats are properly threatening, but failing challenges is frustrating. When a horror game frustrates me, it loses whatever grip it had and it's tough to get it back after that. The main problems which took me out of this game were related to enemy design, placement, behaviors, and weapon balance. The basic enemy of this game looks like it came from the Unity asset store. It's the same humanoid spooperman that looks like a dude in a rubber gore suit that's also in every indie horror demo on itch.io and Gamejolt. To be fair, I saw two other enemy designs besides …6 found this helpful
I'm so happy that I finally got to play Dement after following it for years! It's pretty much exactly what I'd hoped for which is a true old-school survival horror game for VR. It reminds me A LOT of Silent Hill and I can spot some Twin Peaks in it as well. Playing this brings me back to my childhood, feeling the same feelings I felt playing SH and RE on PS1 & SH2 on PS2. Take this review with a huge portion of salt since there's basically a complete overhaul coming to the game in a future update, I'm just reviewing the game as it is right now hoping it can get some more attention which it really deserves. The gameplay holds up surprisingly well, though a bit dated by today's VR standards. It can be pretty frustrating at times but you get over it. The puzzles have been fun and clever, exploration is great and there's item combining, ammo crafting and a lot of other good stuff. My biggest problem is with combat, especially melee but the game is pretty generous with healing items which compensates a lot so it stopped bothering me after a while, I also got better at the game eventually. Graphics hold up really well and look great on the Quest 2 but the scale on some of the object…4 found this helpful
This seems like i would up my alley , but atm the combat ruins it for me. While I dont think a horror game should have amazing combat, i still think it needs to balanced. Fighting anything in this using melee feels so awkward, from dodging to the stamina meter (which i find odd in a vr game, even for saints and sinners). I'll keep my eyes on it for now but atm, I dont think i can recommend it.3 found this helpful
It has been over two years since the last update. Update before they a year and a half prior. Stay away and keep your money.

Couldn't progress. The game spawns you in a long hallway and tells you to go to a specific room. At the door nothing happened and i couldn't interact with anything. Other ways are blocked off by invisible walls telling you to go to the room. Can't really comment on gameplay but the game doesn't really seem worth the money as it has no hand tracking, weird menus and overall just looks really "Indie" in terms of graphics and communicating with the player.
