The game utilizes environmental tools, such as detailed visuals, perfectly timed audio, and a Gothic setting to convey and promote fear and panic in the player. Players will find many moments where their eyes will play tricks on them, causing them to think there’s a creature lurking at the end of the hall when in fact it’s just a side table stacked with items.

This is the kind of game where, if you're going to try running it on a modern PC, there is a good chance that it will crash on the title screen due to compatibility issues. The fix that worked for me was going to the game's settings, clicking "Properties…", and then on the General tab you will see "Launch Options". Input the following code: cmd /c "set OPENSSL_ia32cap=:~0x20000000 && %command%" Make sure to include all the spaces and quotation marks. If you entered it correctly, the game should now work just fine, or at least it did for me. With that out of the way, how is the game itself? The Dark Occult is the kind of horror game that basically goes through many of the horror cliches you have seen up to this point, but there is something charming about its silly, over-the-top scares and crazy visuals during them. As for the game itself, it has a LOT of running around, not knowing where to go. The map sort of helps, but you have to play on Dread Mode to even have a map. It is so hard not to get lost because so many parts of the house look the same and the layout is very complex. I found myself going in circles more times than I could count and while the game has a reliable save …
I honestly wish there was a neutral rating on steam. This game is odd because it does a lot right, but also has a lot of issues that will turn off some players. This is made ever the more clear by the mixed rating on steam. That being said I am giving it a recommendation because this game scared the s**t out of me and that's saying a lot coming from a mega fan of horror. Let's start with the good: -Atmosphere is impeccable -Great visuals -Amazing setting (sure it's a haunted house, but it's well designed) -Should run well on the vast majority of pcs (ran this at 4k on a laptop with 4gb VRAM) -Amazing and varied scares and not overly reliant on jumpscares -Enjoyed the puzzles The scares are singlehandedly why this game gets a recommendation. It's probably in the top 5 scariest games I've ever played. It starts off pretty okay in the scare department, but it quickly becomes tense and nerve racking, with a good variety of scares. As the game progresses, the jumpscares become virtually not existent. This game has some of the most terrifying moments I've ever experienced. Years later I still have PTSD from some of these moments. the TLDR version is If you can stomach he negatives, th…
It sucks, really. Dont buy
