Germany At War: Soviet Dawn is a turn-based operational wargame that boasts a strong historical focus, guiding players through all critical stages of the conflict, with 9 campaigns and 20 single scenarios that sometimes extend beyond. The game features two major campaigns, one for each side, allowing players to command either German forces through a branching historical campaign encompassing the entire 1941 campaign and part of the 1942 campaign, or assume the Soviet banner to defend against invaders and exact revenge in 1944/45. This is a grand strategy-operational game like the old General series. The player can be in charge of an army group or the whole front. There is a possibility to upgrade your favorite units. The OOB is quite accurate if you are interested in playing with the historical OOB, or you may use a random unit number generator. There is a map/mission editor and you can create new missions.

This is indeed a hidden gem. If you can live with the somewhat poor presentation you get a game that evolves and gets better and better the more you play. This is not a puzzler like so many others, but gives you much more operational freedom and makes you think real hard for a good plan. Its very customisable and will keep you entertained for many hours. The biggest campaign is nearly 30 scenarios long and you take your core units with you - indeed almost all units are core units and you can buy, rename, refit your units and get attached to them. Fight all the way to the east.. it is a rewarding experience and labour of love!

I played couple of scenarios; so far so good. Quite easy on normal. QOL very good compared to older games. Worth playing.
