About Cauldrons of War - Barbarossa
Cauldrons of War Barbarossa is a turn-based strategic wargame.
From June 1941 until the Battle of Moscow, play the USSR or the Axis forces in one of the largest and bloodiest operations in history.
That was the summary, now I want to explain to you as an author what I wanted to do with this game:
"My intention was to make a very historic Wargame which would be the ideal game to launch when you want your WWII shoot
without wanting to launch one of your usual games that last for weeks.
I was also tired of the hexagons and "regions", I wanted to test a new system based on operations.
The result is more historic, simpler and faster.
I also wanted the gameplay to be very different for the German and the Soviet,
and I think you will see by playing that each side has its own particular feeling.
What I can promise you is that you have never played a wargame like this before and that like playtesters,
you'll want to come back to it often.

This is one of those reviews where I wish there was some in-between yes and no for a rating, because... well, Barbarossa is a good game. I had fun with it. The problem is that the sequel, Stalingrad, blows this game out of the water; with major quality-of-life improvements, dev notes, more operations, mechanics... and since they're the same price, suddenly it becomes very hard to recommend this game, because Stalingrad's breakthroughs haven't been ported over. So I don't see much reason to play this one once you have Stalingrad. Get it on sale or bundle it with Stalingrad, otherwise, I'd advise not to buy this one.5 found this helpful

A simple and fun game, although less polished than Cauldrons of War: Stalingrad. Both campaigns for the Soviets and Germans are fun, with several scenarios to choose from. It is however a shame that for the germans you cant actually reach all the way to the Archangelsk-Astrakhan line as they intended, with the furthest the game takes you being the northern portion of Volga, taking Karelia and Murmansk, taking Moscow and taking Rostov on Don.
Strangely addictive. Youtubers make this look far too easy for my own good.
Fun WWII that game doesn't take 100s of hours. Has enough depth to keep you interested. Well presented WWII strategy.
I really enjoy this little game. Even as a campaign, it's only a couple of hours, allowing you to try different strategies in a fairly short period of times. It's not a very complicated logistics set-up, but it's realistic, and utterly crippling at times. It's easy to understand, but difficult to master.
