About Dark Sheep

What is Dark Sheep?

Dark Sheep is a block-pushing puzzle game with horror elements, and a love letter to the Commodore 64, both in visuals and audio! Plays like classic Sokoban with new twists that force you to find creative solutions!

The Lord Demands a Sacrifice.

As a new member of an unholy cult, your job is to kidnap sheep, keeping them safe until the day of the ritual comes. Trick the sheep by using the grass as a bait to lure them into cages. Plan your moves ahead. Two sheep cannot take the same path. You‘ll do things in the name of your Dark Lord, that you wouldn't do in other puzzle games.

Perform Dark Arts

The day of the ritual has come. Will you witness the Dark Lord's glorious return, or will things take an even more sinister turn? See the ritual through, and face the consequences that fall on you and your brotherhood.

✦ AI summary

Dark Sheep is a well-designed sokoban puzzle game with a unique mechanic where the path matters as much as the destination, featuring creepy retro aesthetics and gradually increasing difficulty that most players find engaging. However, players report frustrating technical issues including occasional input lag that causes missed keystrokes, and some feel the interface lacks basic quality-of-life features that make extended play sessions tedious, though the undo function mitigates the impact of mistakes.

Clever games curator review: 7/10. A sokoban where the path that you push things matters at least as much as where they end up. You start off with sheep that must eat all the grass, never passing over a patch more than once. And by the end game you also have devils that must eat the fattened sheep. While it doesn’t feel like the most fresh design ever it definitely doesn’t feel like a generic and low-effort Sokoban clone either. While I enjoyed my time in this game to be sure, I also found it to be extremely uneven, with several notable flaws that brought the score down to 7/10. Depending on your tolerance for these issues, you may feel like even that is too kind. The puzzles are very casual at first. I doubt I needed more than one try to pass any of the first 15 levels, or even a single undo. And for the next 15 levels the unlimited undo was enough to allow me to charge in without too much planning and easily fix the occasional mistake that I made in the process. All of this built up to five surprisingly challenging end levels that were quite satisfying but also a huge leap of difficulty over what came before. I will s…

I like the Commodore 64 look. I don't like the music (sounds too random), but that can be turned off. The sound effects are fine. Gameplay is what I was lead to believe it'd be from the preview, which is good. There seems to be a glitch with the controls where sometimes a keystroke will get ignored, which can lead to making bogus moves. (Linux version, if that matters.) This isn't a game-breaker since you can undo moves without penalty, but it's still irritating.

Creepy atmosphere, retro graphics, and puzzles that are the perfect amount of challenge. Dark Sheep has a lot to offer. Just don't ask why you can pick up the axe...

the lack of basic functionality makes it a slog to play

Amazing puzzle game with a great atmosphere. Certainly pick this one up if you're in to Sokobans. My only complaint would be that the sheep cages don't become pushable objects after being filled.
