✦ AI summary

The Caretaker is a survival horror game where you explore the decaying Red Chapel Town scavenging for supplies and uncovering the mystery of why you were released from captivity. Battle twisted creatures lurking in streets and buildings while solving puzzles and piecing together the dark truth behind the town's apocalyptic collapse.

Survive this nightmarish aftermath by exploring Red Chapel Town. Search your way through its streets and buildings for anything you can use to keep you alive and to keep you moving. Fight your way through hideous creatures hellbent on making you their next meal all while uncovering what the hell happened…

They let you out of your cell… they didn’t even tell you why.
There's a cloud of black and grey filling the sky and the emergency siren is deafening.
No one even cares that you’re there, like you don’t even exist. They all seem so… preoccupied.
Cars are turned over, some even on fire. Blood stains on the walls and concrete too.
What do you care… they opened the door… now your free…

- Search streets, alleyways, yards, buildings, and sewers to find needed items and answers.
- Make your way through Red Chapel by deciphering puzzles and using hidden key items.
- Blast through hideous and unnatural creations through a mix of gun play and quick thinking.

✦ AI summary

The Caretaker offers decent atmosphere and world-building with solid gameplay diversity, unique boss designs, and plenty of secrets to discover, earning praise from players who enjoy its horror-survival blend. However, the game suffers from noticeable control jank stemming from its mouse-heavy Diablo-like interface, including issues with wall collision blocking interactions and limited weapon-switching options, while the overall difficulty is relatively low and lacks additional difficulty modes for replayability.
The Premise

This review contains no spoilers.
The Caretaker is a top-down survival horror set during year 2005 in the city of Red Chapel, where a mysterious plague has transformed animals and humans alike, into deadly monsters. Players impersonate an unnamed survivor seemingly immune to the contamination, and have to find a way through the ruins of a dead city, deemed irrecoverable even by the military. Adequate gameplay flow, with enough diversity. 3. Unique bosses, each with an evolving attack pattern and decent design. 4. Decent amount of secondary locations and secrets to discover. 1. Some combat mechanics prove to be very overpowered, until late-game. 2. Resources are generally too plentiful, dimming the survival aspect. 3. A top-down survival horror game mixing combat with puzzles and travels back and forth across a small town. The game has its fair bit of jank, most of it stemming from the fact that it is almost completely controlled with the mouse similar to how a Diablo game would be played. At times walls will be in front of what you want to interact with, the walls turn transparent which is good, but at times they will still act as if they are what you wanted to click on rather than the item or enemy that is behind it. The game has rebindable keys but weapon switching will only be done with the mouse wheel rather than having an individual key for each weapon. That said the game is pretty easy and could use more than its single difficulty to add more replayability. Except for a boss or two taking me down I only died a single time.
