Marimoth is a 2D retro pixel ripoff of Galaga, but featuring worse graphics and a 2D monochrome "moth" theme. How this was intended to improve on the original Galaga game from Namco in 1981 is unclear. The technical implementation here is a farce, with locked controls and resolution, 2D only graphics, and a locked 4:3 aspect ratio, much like televisions from the 1950's. The developers were simply incapable of making the game work in 16:9 resolution. For background information, Marimoth was released on Steam as a $2 paid product in 2021, some 40 (FOURTY) years after the release of Galaga, despite being a worse product. Galaga, by comparison, is superior, free, and can be played easily in a web browser. I think this stands as a ringing indictment on the absolute blight that amateur "indie" game developers are and the negative impact they have on gaming in general. Due to the terribly poor quality of this product, I cannot recommend it. I wanted to take the time to review this game since it doesn't have that much coverage, and I personally enjoyed my time playing. Marimoth is a Galaga-style bullet hell that runs for about 5 levels and 5 bosses, with 3 powerups and 1-2 potential revives. It's really fun! It's simple and easy to understand, there's the constant tug of war between wanting to dive for coins and dodging bullets, as one who doesn't typically play these kinds of games, I was pleasantly surprised. I also took the time to earn and complete the secret level, which was a great challenge that put my skills to the test. In order to get to the secret level you have to
play levels 1-4 without getting hit
. I had to change my entire play-style to adapt to this. I would precisely shoot down enemies in the first stage to farm for coins, hoping to earn an upgrade per level in order to focus solely on dodging by the fourth stage. Although, thank god you don't have to flawless the fifth stage- cause it highlights a couple of my main gripes with the game. Some things are just impossible to dodge lol. There are enemies that move/shoot almost completely horizontal, forcing you into a corner where yo…6 found this helpful
If you enjoy pain and torture, this game is highly recommended for you. but if you want to play game that give pain, torture and fun, try souls-like games. the music is okay tho.3 found this helpful
Pretty chillaxing fun game but don't expect any checkpoints or saves!3 found this helpful
A fairly decent space invaders style shooter but with a cute moth who shoots... uh... moth balls???? It's not a bad deal even at full price. The music is also very cute and relaxing.2 found this helpful
Marimoth is a pretty simple shoot ‘em up/bullet hell kind of game. You shoot projectiles diagonally, and they bounce off walls. Defeat enemies to proceed to the next level. Enemies drop coins, for every 50 you get a boost in firepower (more projectiles). Additionally, bosses drop orbs that can be used to continue after dying in exchange for 5 of them. The biggest issue I have with the game is that I think the game could’ve used better visual clarity. Your projectiles, enemy projectiles, and pick-ups all have the same color scheme, and they tend to blur together. As a result, it can be a bit overwhelming to look at. I really think at least coins could’ve looked more distinct. That’s it. That’s pretty much all there is to it. It’s a simple and short, but challenging shoot ‘em up where you play as a moth in 5 different worlds, 5 levels each, the last level is always a boss. There’s no hidden mechanics. There is a hidden boss accessible by not taking damage until the last level. I might attempt it later, but I don’t feel like being a mister perfect run right now, so I’ll pass. That really all there is to Marimoth. Sounds pretty unimpressive, right? I can’t even stretch …1 found this helpful
