About Space Toads Mayhem

Space Toads Mayhem is an arcade-style, topdown shooter paying homage to classics from the 1980s - some say it tastes like arcade-flavoured ice cream with laser blast sprinkles :)
It's a challenging, reflex-based game, rewarding a player who enjoys fast-paced action and can utilise enemy behaviour to his / her advantage.
Select Features
- Dodge 'em up style gameplay: constant, skillful player movement is required in order to survive at later stages. Anticipation and skill are key as the player's spaceship is often not fast enough to twitch out of trouble at the very last moment.
- Enemies with a bit of personality: simple emotional states are implemented which affect how enemies behave. For example, each of the enemies chooses to attack the player at a different point in time since being spawned.
- Epic Powerups: Mega Death Sun and Vicious Red Hole are among those making easy work of the incoming hordes.
- Chance for a good drop mechanic: as the player progresses through the level and the difficulty increases, good powerups are harder to find and nasty traps start to appear.
- Arcade-style, challenging action: Due to a degree of unpredictability in enemy behaviour and randomised gameplay elements, it is not possible to truly learn any levels by heart - therefore the player needs to stay focused all the way through every single time.

i first played this game at a gaming event a couple of years ago and fell for it straight away: you have a minimal design with challenging fun gameplay, with excellent sound effects and music. While the graphics might seem simplistic there is more to them on a second glance. Highly recommended, idea for short bursts of gaming. a real pleasure to play4 found this helpful

Nice leaderboards makes score chasing more fun. Varied power-ups and weapons. Reminds me of: If you liked Deep Space Waifu, you'll probably like Space Toads Mayhem. I hugely appreciated that the game worked well with my controller, as it was nice to sit back on the couch and get away from the keyboard and mouse for a while. The controls are on point, and if you screw up, you always know it's your fault ;) I didn't come across anything game-breaking in the bugs department, but there were a few oddities that will hopefully see some attetion. Game is "fullscreen" sort of... but it looks 4:3 like on an old square TV. This would be no issue, but the Steam start-up graphic in the corner will leave a grey mess in the bottem right corner of the screen, unless you quickly shift+tab before it has…2 found this helpful
Great nostalgic feeling. I've been following this game for a while and it hasn't disappointed me, plays well and can be quite challenging. Reminds me very much of the old arcade systems.2 found this helpful
Haven't played an arcade space shooter since Windows95, and although Space Toads Mayhem is a fun game, it's also insanely challenging. The HUD design could do with some colour variation, like green to red on the dials etc, and effects for damage dealt and taken are not distinctive enough to tell them apart even when things are not chaotic. Besides the UI and effects the AI are great, they provide a unique challenge for each playthrough; mixing it up with fast paced lunges timed randomly while the slow ones dog-pile you probably being the most frustrating of their attacks. I might play drums and have a passion for the funk but, honestly, don't know anything about retro game music, that said; the tracks I heard were present enough to set the tone while not being obtrusive, so a definite bonus for anyone who likes to crank the tunes up. Space Toads Mayhem is not one for the greenhorn, if you've spent a good time fairing the solar shores of arcade shooters you'll have a blast, everyone else will probably just enjoy the first level. For just about "three fiddy" it's worth a shot to see if you've got what it takes!1 found this helpful
I too saw this game being demo'd at a couple of Play Expo shows and eagerly awaited the public release. Does what it says on its tin! Excellent 1980s arcade shooter style. Yes, I was a teenager back then and frequented videogame arcades - never enough money - good times! Now, 30 years later I get to go old school for free! Well apart from the price of the game itself! :D If you like this genre, then BUY SPACE TOADS: MAYHEM now! Recommended.1 found this helpful
