Aokana - Four Rhythms Across the Blue - EXTRA2 is a focused continuation that gives Misaki Tobisawa considerably more room to develop beyond the conclusion of her original route. Rather than retelling familiar events or attempting to introduce another large collection of romantic possibilities, it concentrates on what happens after Misaki and Masaya Hinata have already established their relationship. Developed by sprite and NekoNyan Ltd. and published by NekoNyan Ltd. and HIKARI FIELD, the game is clearly designed for players who already know Aokana's characters and its unusual competitive world. The story takes place several months after Misaki's victory in the fall Flying Circus tournament. That achievement should theoretically leave her feeling completely satisfied, yet EXTRA2 recognizes that reaching an important goal can create just as much uncertainty as pursuing one. With summer approaching its end, Misaki has to consider what comes next. Her ability is no longer something she can easily dismiss, and her success has brought additional attention and expectations. An Absolute Masterpiece.

I thought Mashiro's Extra 1 was nice fluff and worth reading, but this elevated Misaki's route into something almost transcendental. Her character growth is amazing, and this Extra has the best writing in the entire set of Aokana-related content. (The only downside might be that the h-scenes disappoint with some bad writing, but that's hardly new. A lot of VNs suffer from this problem. The church setting in one of them was really funny though.) I really don't have much to say beyond that -- just, if you liked Misaki's route in the original VN, this is absolutely 100% required reading. Don't miss out or skip this!!
