Shiren the Wanderer: The Mystery Dungeon of Serpentcoil Island

I already own a copy of every EN release of Shiren since the 1995 release, but I couldn't resist buying 5 & 6 on PC apart from switch/PSP. I absolutely LOVE Shiren the Wanderer, and I hope someday they bring the original games to PC as well! I can't wait to play this one for the second time through lol. Verdict: More... MORE. 8.5/10, would mystery dungeon again :D

An abolutely tremendous true roguelike and an easy reccomendation for any fan of the genre. There's tons and tons of content to enjoy for both veterans and newcomers alike. Chunsoft really outdid themselves with this one.

At first, I was really skeptical of this one. They removed a lot of the features of the previous game (Shiren: Tower Of Fortune) and didn't seem to add any new ones, other than quality of life stuff. But it's only after playing a fair bit that it's apparent: it really is the better game. The stuff they removed - particularly the Night mechanic - wasn't making the game more fun. And the quality of life stuff is really significant.

Great game, good introduction to the series. Love how it looks a bit like the SFC box art of the first game. I haven't been able to put it down since I picked it up. It's kinda like chess if chess kept introducing new pieces you had to adapt to.

Shiren the Wanderer is a mystery dungeon game which means it's the japanese counterpart of the old-school western roguelike games like Rogue, ADOM and Nethack to name a few. While these western games are typically very complex and difficult, Shiren is streamlined and not too obtuse with it's mechanics. This is actually a deceptively simple game to get into, with both pros and cons. It's a matter of taste of course but Shiren lost a lot of character by going from 2D pixel art to this generic 3D look which is quite ugly in my opinion. Colors are bland, maps are bland and actually the whole looks pretty bland. In my experience the gameplay was also choppy in villages which is inexcusable for a game like this, but there haven't been any problems during the actual gameplay so it's just a minor hickup. This time Shiren is of to the Serpentcoil Island to kill a monster which may or may not have a girl or treasure inside of it. There are 31 floors to clear in the main game and apparently 99 if you include the end-game. The opening hours are pretty straight forward, clear a floor and proceed to the next one, gather loot, use it to survive and do some shopping in between the dungeons. If…
