About Hotel 188

✦ AI summary

Hotel 188 is a psychological horror exploration game set in the unsettling maze of the Backrooms, where you navigate disorienting rooms that shift and repeat while solving environmental puzzles designed to unsettle you. The fear comes not from monsters or jumpscares but from the oppressive atmosphere, eerie silence, and creeping sense that something fundamental is wrong with reality itself.

In Hotel 188, there are no monsters chasing you or cheap jumpscares. The fear comes from somewhere else: the atmosphere, the silence, the sound of your own footsteps… and that constant feeling that something doesn’t quite fit.You wake up in a place you don’t recognize. Time doesn’t move forward, the rooms feel the same but different each time you return to them, and the only path is forward... even though you have no idea where “forward” is. Soon enough, disorientation becomes part of the journey. You start to get lost, doubt yourself, and wonder if you should keep playing or take a break. This is the real experience of the Backrooms. It’s not just about looking, it’s about feeling it deep inside.Hotel 188 is not just about walking aimlessly. Along the way, you’ll find small puzzles that aren’t just there for decoration. They are part of the world, integrated into the environment, forcing you to think, go back, and observe more than you thought you needed. They’re not impossible, but they are designed to get under your skin, just when you thought you understood what was going on.Every sound, every flickering light, every room that seems the same but isn’t… everything is crafted to make you feel that this “hotel” has a life of its own. And the worst part is, you don’t know if it wants you to leave… or stay.Hotel 188 is for those who seek more than just a typical horror game. It’s for those who want to experience the true anxiety of the Backrooms, get lost in them, get frustrated, and still keep exploring. Because you know that somewhere in this maze, there’s an exit… or is there?

Hotel 188 is a psychological horror game that transforms an ordinary hotel into an unsettling labyrinth of uncertainty, isolation, and mysterious architectural spaces. Developed by Leonn Camayo and published by Andes Interactive, the game draws inspiration from the Backrooms phenomenon and the disturbing atmosphere of liminal environments. Rather than relying on aggressive enemies, graphic violence, or predictable jump scares, it focuses on creating psychological discomfort through exploration and environmental ambiguity. Its greatest appeal comes from making players feel vulnerable in seemingly harmless surroundings, demonstrating how familiar places can become frightening when their underlying logic begins to disappear. The story begins with the protagonist awakening inside a mysterious hotel without a clear explanation of how they arrived. Surrounded by repetitive corridors, unfamiliar rooms, and seemingly endless passageways, players must investigate their surroundings and search for a possible escape. The narrative deliberately avoids excessive exposition, allowing environmental details to communicate much of the mystery. This minimalist storytelling approach encourages curio…

A breath of fresh air when it comes to liminal space games. I really liked for a change, that the game actually gives you clear objectives instead of just letting you wander around aimlessly. The puzzles were challenging at first, but never felt frustrating or unfair. And that ending… pure nightmare fuel that caught me off guard. :D 9/10

Started off as a very scenic and graphically stunning walking sim, but then turned into one of the spookiest and anxiety ridden rides I have gotten from a liminal space game. 10/10

This game is really solid. It had all the elements of Liminal-Type games that are enjoyable. (I like peaceful games. It's eerie, but its not scary.) The puzzles were fun. DON'T PRESS THE COMPUTER SCREEN unless you want to RESTART that level. Good solid B+/A. Played for 3 hours and made it to the end. I would love a HOTEL 188 Pt2.

Overall, a good puzzle game with creepy vibes, set in a liminal environment inspired by the Heathrow airport hotel so commonly seen in liminal space games. It's decently challenging and has a good atmosphere to it. My only two criticisms are as follows: 1) the puzzle with the portraits with the eyes that light up was a bit odd, as the clue provided felt kind of unhelpful (though this is admittedly subjective and could just be a reflection of me being a dumbo); and 2) the anomaly stage was a bit weird too as at one point one of the default features in the environment seemed to change partway through, which was highly confusing (I don't know if that was intentional or a bug, but it was very bizarre). But other than that, Hotel 188 is a decent game and well worth a try! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6gXDy05d5O8&list=PLA-B0nG-hT0A&index=1&t=119s
