"The Backrooms: Expedition" feels like one of the developer's first projects. They just wanted to take a shot at the Backrooms and have a bit of fun. The game isn't outright bad, I've played way worse, but I don't think it deserves to be paid; that's why this is a negative review. The Good: - Good graphics, admittedly. - Responsive controls - While the game feels like an asset flip, the assets actually feel like they belong to a common art style and they mesh relatively well together, which most games of this caliber can't pull off. The Bad: - Very short. Finished the game in exactly 20 minutes. - Level design feels uninspired. The point of a Backrooms game is to be able to make a barren environment interesting; this game doesn't quite cut it. It mostly feels like an empty map with random models added as an afterthought, more than being designed with its decoration in mind. - Low quality horror. The painted arrows and text such as "He's watching" on the walls were more corny than anything else, and the occasional random noise barely made me flinch. - Very boring entity chase. The entity (whose appearance is straight up stolen from Kane Pixels) doesn't look nor sound scary, and th…3 found this helpful
I'm a big Backrooms and liminal fan, and while it's impossible for me to dislike any game made under these themes, I have to say this one probably felt the weakest. It felt kind of soulless; kind of just another lazy copy/paste of many other Backrooms games that have come before it. I could notice seams of walls and repeating texture patterns, and the seams of the start/end of the SFX. There are no options on the pause menu aside from what graphics presets to use. The monsters that chase you have a horribly cliche tense horror music play which feels so over the top cheesy it just completely detracts from the suspense. All that aside, for something positive, it was a very relaxing game to play and I love hearing the warm buzzing of the lights; they made me sleepy. The atmosphere was also very nice. If this is this guy's first game, you have potential, but perhaps work on some things. Thank you for making the game. ^^2 found this helpful
Backrooms Expedition is exactly what I want from a Backrooms game. Like most games inspired by the Backrooms, the focus here is on unsettling liminal spaces. Empty hallways, strange rooms, and environments that feel familiar while also feeling completely wrong. The game does a great job of creating that uneasy feeling that something isn't quite right, even when nothing is actively happening. Of course, it wouldn't be a Backrooms game without a few things trying to hunt you down. Throughout the experience, there are plenty of creepy creatures that show up to remind you that you're definitely not alone. When they do appear, the anxiety ramps up quickly and can lead to some genuinely tense moments. What I really appreciated, though, was the pacing. Some areas are creepy and stressful, while others are surprisingly calm. There are stretches where you're simply exploring these strange spaces, soaking in the atmosphere and wondering what's around the next corner. That balance helps make the scarier moments hit harder when they finally arrive. Visually, the game looks great. The environments are detailed, the lighting works well, and the overall presentation does a fantastic job of se…1 found this helpful
Super short backrooms experience. I liked what there was of it. It did say to be continued at the end. I hope it will be continued and not get abandoned like so many other Backrooms games on Steam. There is a small chase but it doesn't take away from the exploration element. It has potential, just needs a lot more content.
i mean, its alright
Welp, decided to check this out. Price was cheap so I thought why not.. You are definitely getting what you paid for. The "jump scares" arnt even there, which I was really hoping for. The movement is laggy bad! Does it have potential? ehhh prob not but beat the whole game in like 30 min. First run through! if I could get my money back i would.
