Sigma Star Saga DX

This was a beloved classic back on the Gameboy Advance, and the DX version still holds up well even today. The quality of life improvements are very welcomed, especially being able to just hold down the fire button instead of having to repeatedly press it during the space shooter segments, but also the more reasonable encounter rates compared to the really high ones of the original release, and more frequent locations to save your game as you play. For the uninitiated, the story has a lot of twists and turns, which keeps things surprising right up until the end. There are meaningful choices at certain points in the game that will change the ending that you receive, so there is some nice replay value here. Which is good, because if you want to 100% the game, you'll have to play through it multiple times to reach all the endings, as well as revisit earlier areas later in the game to get all the hidden items and secrets. Keep in mind this is not a HD remaster though, so despite the shiny new title screen for the DX version, visually the game looks like it ever did on the GBA, and isn't all that different than if you played on emulators, except for the aforementioned quality of l…

This game is like if Illusion of Gaia met Stargate Atlantis. It's a GBA game also. So After playing it a few hours Lets talk about Gameplay/Concept: As Mentioned it plays Like illusion of Gaia, even though you have a gun to kill enemies instead of a sword. The Biggest Notice you will find is that the game Plays A LOT like a old School JRPG - It has Side scrolling Shooting elements, and those elements are tied to Random Encounters. Yes you heard that right, In order for you to level up in the game you have grind random encounters for experience and that is tied by step count - Thus if you want to level up in this game you need to grind out in areas to get XP and make your ship more powerful. That Alone will either make or break the game for you, considering Shoot'em ups are skill based, as it does have those elements however if you are an Old school RPG fan, Who likes Shoot'em ups, and GBA games. A hybrid side-scrolling space shooter and top-down action adventure brought to modern platforms twenty years after its original release with bug fixes and quality-of-life improvements, and an intriguing story in a compelling sci-fi world with genre-mixing gameplay held back by outdated technical limitations. Most narrative progress happens in the top-down adventure on a series of planets and space stations. This is sort of a “Zelda-Lite”; there’s combat, exploration, traversal puzzles, secrets to find, and new abilities you gain as the story progresses that allow you to reach new places, but none of this is particularly complex. Puzzles and combat are both fairly trivial and the abilities are more like keys on a ring than tools on a belt, letting you pass specific obstacles rather than recontextualizing gameplay. The only real secrets or collectibles are varyingly-hidden “gun data” that can be used in the shooter segments. And there are many hidden secrets in the game to add to the enjoyment in New Game +. [h3] Recommendation [/h3] This game is well worth the $20. The original Game Boy Advance game had a bug in New Game + where the fifth boss would softlock the game. That bug has been fixed. And the Quality of Life improvements to the game make this the best edition of the game ever! [h3] Criticisms [/h3] The random ship battles are usually way too easy or way too hard. There isn't much in between the two. And when you go to New Game +, you can almost sleep through the battles. But that's not necessarily a bad thing, since you'll be combing each and every corner of each and every planet for that gun data! I can't say the story or writing is amazing, or that it's even a very fun game. Personally, I've not been a fan of shmups since the early 90s, and this one lacks meat on the bone compared to some Genesis classics. However, I can still recommend it as an interesting attempt at a unique arpg/shmup mashup, or as a 70s sci fi b-movie. Also, it's developed by the venerable Wayforward, so you at least know the gameplay, music and pixel art are solid, albeit the mechanics themselves being quite simple here. I like it when they include all the concept art/soundtrack/etc in a pretty wrapper, and not just in the game but in the installation directory. S'okay if you're in the mood for GBA nostalgia. Side tangent, I appreciate the dev work around emulation and also respect how Limited Run Games rereleased physical GBA cartridges in the year 2026... they're crazy and I like that.
