This slower-paced shoot'em up game reminds me and probably many others of Jets'n'Guns and Tyrian, with its expensive upgrade system and ship customization, but unlike the two aforementioned games, it does not allow for grinding your way to being overpowered. The game is carefully balanced to be challenging when it wants to, and ask you to modify and try new ways to approach levels or bosses. In the opening sector generously featured in the demo (expect over 4 hours of play!), this means you will start just pew pewing a couple of enemies trying to barely make it to the end of most levels. Like me, you will probably avoid planets because of their hazards and stick to easier to navigate space stages at first. But as my options and familiarity progressed, I eventually began to get ahead of the curves in some places, eventually making my way past the hard three first bosses. It took nearly 2 hours of attempts and dozens of setups to beat General Tygeon, but I finally did it, and never felt frustrated in the process. I have begun playing the second sector after clearing the demo, and I was greeted with new environments and threats, the game introducing them slowly alongside upgrades min…8 found this helpful
Written By Hidden Gems Review : https://store.steampowered.com/curator/38624426/, Follow me!
StarGun is a Shoot 'Em Up RPG game. Amazing gameplay, music and metaprogresion, very challenging mostly in the beggining even on easy mode, for me is a masterpiece of the genre Shoot 'Em up.5 found this helpful
I'm writing this as someone who has Tyrian, Raptor, Jets 'n Guns and Stargunner installed. I'm at the early game right now and your game sucks. Don't get me wrong, your game doesn't suck. Your EARLY game sucks. Hell it sucks big time. You have the worst game loop for early game. First of all no game should start everything locked. Players needs some options, they need to try different things. Second, all three of the first weapons I unlocked are front firing, slow firing, with no area of effect. What am i gonna do with these weapons? Face forward enemies, try to kill them in missionary position while they use 360 degree turrets and heat-seekers? This not difficulty, its's artificial difficulty. This is boring, tedious, Galaga-*ss game play. This is no longer 1980's, hell even in 1990's we invented interesting weapons for shumups. Tyrian has plasma storm, sonic wave, multi gun. Raptor and Stargunner have nukes. JnG has bombs, rockets, a couple of autotrackers. Those weapons were available even before starting level 1, I cleared 5 levels in this game and still have no interesting weapons. Third, enemies are way too sturdy, i have all the weapons (which is only one btw) all th…2 found this helpful
A really interesting vertical 2D shooter, that sets an unusual example , in a good way, from most similar games. It offers a great variety of choices for ship components that the players has to carefully select from, as well as very accurate ship control.2 found this helpful
Super hard, but really fun to tailor specific builds to a mission. The game is balanced very tightly in the resources you have available to you, but it often feels that the weapons you are given do not outperform weapons you already have- leading to many disappointments.
as brutal as it is addicting
