Story
The town of Hallfein once rested on the border between three provinces, prospering thanks to mining and trade.
However, a mysterious tragedy struck the peaceful town, and most of its residents completely vanished.
Hallfein became a restricted area, and access was forbidden to all except investigators from the capital.
Years passed, and the restrictions were eventually lifted, after which plans to restore the town were put together. Taking this opportunity, a young man and young woman follow their hearts and return to Hallfein after being forced to leave it so long ago; the young woman wanting to restore the shop previously run by her missing grandfather, and the young man hoping to learn more about the items left to him by his departed father. They both also seek to learn why the town's residents vanished that day.
The two will meet and set out on a journey in search of the truth together. However, neither could imagine just what would await them on that journey.
It all comes down to Storytelling
Firstly, mechanics are fine, the battles can get a little samey and the crafting a little finnicky, but on the whole they hold up well enough. Aesthetically solid in terms of fidelity and art direction, music is unremarkable but inoffensive, the bulk of combat zones being procedurally generated rather than handcrafted leaves them feeling shallow and samey, with the small handful of handcrafted maps feeling precious by comparison. Developing the town is motivating and mechanically rewarding, and the craftable battle tools felt a tad redundant in comparison to the character's skills having better damage scaling, go for support and debuff tools, not damage. It is the story where things really get rough. Firstly, I was waiting the entire game for a villain to appear, a charismatic presence to tie together the antagonistic forces, not all games need one, but with how this game had structured the hostile forces, it honestly could have used one. Essentially some now-dead cultists from over a decade ago set some things in motion that resulted in the current crisis, which would fit... in a story that is more successfully oriented around the Sc…2 found this helpful
For the love of god gust either switch to unity full time or actually ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ optimize the katana engine for pc. This game is literally So Good and should be the standard going forward. I actually love yumia and am excited for karia but damn do i have to mod the ♥♥♥♥ out of that game to make it not look and run like ♥♥♥♥. Resleri got me into atelier. good starting point for the series imo. Crossover characters make me interested in going back and learning about them in their own games.1 found this helpful
Pros: - Complex combat gameplay. Really love the multi action system. I also love the item mix system where you combine different items mid battle in order to generate a different item effect. -Alchemy itself is fun. I found myself spending hours just to mix the right ingredients in order to get the item traits than I want. Cons: -Game was not very clear at explaining some of its mechanics. One of the said mechanic is the town level computation. I had to search the internet for a clear explanation. -I wish there were more variety with the boss fights. My favorite boss fight was against the polar nights but the rest were just meh for me, even the final boss. This was my first entry in the Atelier series and overall I had lots of fun playing this game
Heavily reused assets of Atelier Resleriana Season 1. The combat is worst than the mobile game which is pretty insane to say. You will never fight more than 1 target during a boss fight other than for a cameo boss fight. Reducing stun gauge eventually becomes impossible, making that feature and traits related useless. Also missing predicted damage to HP/Stun guage from the mobile game. Story wise, You're going to need to be a long time Atelier player and as well had played at least season 1 of either the JP or Global (End of Serviced) of Atelier Resleriana to understand most of the references. I don't recommend this game unless you want to know more about Resleriana's world and character interactions for future references.
After 40 hours I hit the credits. There is more content after them, but I enjoyed my time and am ready to wrap this up. I give it a very strong recommendation. This review considers what you get in the box. I won’t be factoring in nostalgia appearances of characters from previous Atelier entries. I also won’t be judging its connection to the mobile game of a similar name.
What Works
Most Atelier games have discrete gameplay systems that offer different experiences throughout the runtime of the game. Red Alchemist offers by far the most expertly interwoven systems of the modern Atelier titles. You have the core alchemy crafting, which depends on materials from combat/gathering, which requires advancing the story to gain access to new areas. The best part in this iteration is that the game asks you to really explore all the domains of these discrete mechanics to best enjoy them all. You will need to expand the town to unlock recipes you need for alchemy. You will have to use more complex recipes to get past gear check bosses. There’s much more to it than that, and it stands out for me as the best part of the game. There are also lots of handles to allow you to spend mor…
