Atelier Yumia: The Alchemist of Memories & the Envisioned Land

This game is underrated by veterans who played older games from this franchise, my experience starts from Ryza series. I played Yumia more than enoush to say that its not really a bad game at all, to say more, i feel its quite opposite though not everyone might like some changes in comparison to older games. Im not a type of person to write poems or essays telling every single details, but i think its enough to point out strong and weak sides of the game. + I like open world, its exploration and mats gathering, you simply slowly wander and collect things you want. + Story, Lore, Characters, World i enjoy them too, maybe they fall short to Ryza games, but the gap is not large to call Yumia failure, mediocre or average game. + Alchemy has some simplifications but its still a thing i enjoy the most in this game, i spent countless hours creating items + Visuals are beautiful, giving a proper impression you are exploring typical high-fantasy anime world. +/- Music is still enjoyable but Ryza had much better soundtrack. +/- The game is much more forgiving in comparison to Ryza, where neglecting alchemy could result being suppressed by opponents sooner or later as you had no enough c…

Love the game. Seriously. Either drop the katana engine or actually optimize it for pc. ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥. Running optiscaler and reshade to make the game run as buttery smooth and pretty as it should be out of the box.

As much as I hate to say this, if you're looking for an Atelier game and haven't already played them, just play Ryza. If you have played them and are looking for more, then Yumia is fine, but I don't think it stands up to other Atelier games. Aside from the technical issues, there isn't any single thing that makes me say it's not worth it. Just a dozen tiny factors that all add up to be just a little too frustrating. There was (I don't know if it's been fixed) a graphical setting that flashbanged your screen every time you attacked. The first time you destroy a material after booting or minimizing the game leads to a several second long freeze. The item crafting was simplified to a fault. The open world is decent, but it's segmented enough that it really didn't need to be a full open world, semi-open would've been fine. The base building is neat, but with how small the build areas can be and that you're still getting major blueprint designs dozens of hours into the game, it's far too limited for a very long time. Tbh there isn't one big bad thing that I can point to and say "hey this game is crap". It's the little things that add up to a frustrating experience. Janky combat, oversimplified alchemy, tedious gatherings, boring EA/Genshin style of open world, etc. I don't particularly hate any of those "genres" that much; I've played those and enjoyed a lot of them. But when you packaged them all in the same game... Wasn't exactly enjoyable for me. I can't even say that I dislike this game, but rather indifferent to it. Like if you told me you hate or like this game, I'd be like yea sure whatever i don't care I'm just tired of it let's talk about something more interesting. I'll prob gonna finish the game for the story, since I bought it already and kinda like the characters and plot enough to get me some motivation... but yea.

I wouldn't say I have an encyclopedic knowledge of the Atelier games -- I've really only played Sophie 1 and 2 -- but I have to say I came away feeling impressed with Gust here. They're essentially an Atelier game factory, putting out on average a game a year (though apparently Resleriana followed Yumia here just six months later!) and they could've just kept doing what they were doing. But this is sort of adventurous; this is a far more active and open game than a pure RPG and while it takes some of the old Ubisoft tropes (voice logs! I can't believe we're still listening to abandoned voice memos!) I think Yumia really has Breath of the Wild on its mind. From the gentle Hateno Village-style OST on encampments to assembling champions from different areas to the 'corrupted' appearance of the final area to the moralising on the hubris behind endless techno-optimism -- all the same tropes are here, alongside gradually uncovering a mostly-abandoned post-apocalyptic world with the help of ancient technology. They didn't need to try and do an Atelier BOTW! We could've done some basic mechanical tweaks to the alchemy minigame, we could've kept gating it the same way we gate previous RPG…
