Adventures of Shuggy

Quite fun and challenging. After a long time sitting in my library I decided to give it a try and it was totally worth it. This format of small levels is very nice as you can progress gradually and casually without having to remember where you were after a while not playing. One note: in my system (Win11) I got a bug in which the game would appear as running but not actually launch, other times it would launch and crash. I figured out that it was due to the game's older engine and to fix it you need to: 1. make sure windows media player is installed and working, and 2. play any kind of media (as song, a video, another game, anything with audio) before launching it.

Adventures of Shuggy is a delightful puzzle-platformer that proves creative level design can be just as engaging as flashy visuals or action-heavy gameplay. Developed and published by Smudged Cat Games Ltd., the game follows Shuggy, a young vampire who unexpectedly inherits an enormous castle filled with strange creatures and mysterious challenges. Instead of focusing on combat, the adventure revolves around reclaiming the castle by solving a huge collection of cleverly designed puzzle rooms, each introducing its own mechanics and obstacles. The charming premise immediately establishes a playful atmosphere that remains consistent throughout the experience. The castle serves as a massive playground packed with more than a hundred individual stages spread across several themed locations. Every area introduces fresh gameplay concepts, preventing the adventure from becoming repetitive. Players will encounter gravity-defying rooms, swinging mechanics, teleportation puzzles, rotating environments, size-changing abilities, and even stages that require manipulating time. Pretty decent co-op puzzle experience!

Upon giving it another try, this game is, in some aspects, better than I recalled and worse in others. The better part lies in the quality and variety of the levels. While the ultimate goal of each is to collect all the gems to clear them and gain keys to open other areas with their own sets of levels, it’s expressed through many different gameplay styles, with puzzles involving gravity shifts, multiple selves (even with different gravities), maneuvering small blobs, and so on. There are even three dozen levels designed for co-op with a second player. One downside is the graphics: the sprites are cute, but their animation overall creates the feeling of an old Flash game. The particle effect for collecting gems is hideous; it honestly looks better in screenshots than in motion. The other weak point is how slippery and imprecise the controls can be, sometimes even missing jump inputs, which is not ideal for a game where, short as the levels are, you have to start them over if you die - it can happen without you having really done anything wrong. Definitely a platformer of its time. It strikes gameplay reminiscent of Braid, and the other bite-sized Indies of that time. Note, this will crash if you try to tab-out on modern computers.
