8089: The Next Action RPG

After playing 3089 (and, in spirit, 5089) and not liking it, I wanted to give a fair shake to the developers latest creation in the series. Unfortunately, a game with such heavy reliance on procedural generation needs a LOT more aspects to the game to be worth it. As it stands, progressing through the game feels, quite frankly, meaningless. There are "story milestones" you reach to progress through the increasingly difficult zones, but increased difficulty is more enemy numbers go up, your numbers go down, until you get your numbers back up to snuff. AI doesn't get smarter, new equipment doesnt different additional stats, missions don't get varied from what you've already seen... etc. It's all the same grind with higher numbers and no meaningful progress. Do the exact same thing you were doing a few zones ago, and keep doing it. I found guns to be awful to use in general, whether I made one myself with various parts, or used pre-made ones in gun shops, even with proper gun skill. Melee and grapple-hook'ing everywhere is the only reason i stuck with the game as long as I could. I also don't know why there was a design decision nerf ships and vehicles into the ground. The…

Has a constant very annoying fake vsync tearing effect that you don't see in the game-play videos. No way to disable. I want to rip my eyes out after 45 minutes. Requesting refund

Thought this game would be a lovely continuation of one of my favorite janky games of all time, 3079 - nope. This game crashed every 30 minutes consistently, had the worst and most confusing gameplay, and felt sluggish and slow to play even with 60FPS on a high-spec machine. Phr00t cooked with 3079, not with this. Unfortunate. Even at 60 FPS the camera stutters, the movement feels like you're simultaneously on ice and slimed. Glidey, slow, and just downright awful to play. Had to take an ibprofen an hour in and decided to refund it after crashing for the third time at the 90 minute playtime mark. Not worth it.

This is a 3089 upgrade. Great value for the price! I wonder when 9999 will come out heh.

VR port sucks

Honestly, I had great fun playing this. I found it properly engaging how you go from rags, to riches, back to rags as you push forward in levels. There's a bunch of stuff that's janky, but it's a solo dev - of course it's going to be janky. But the core of it is 100% solid. Made me look forward to playing it in VR, which is bloody well saying something too.
