About 8089: The Next Action RPG
8089 is a fully featured, open world action RPG featuring randomly generated items, customizable weapons, quests and enemies. Spawn into a colorful, wacky world with bug-like aliens running amok.
8089 requires a Vulkan-enabled graphics card with recent drivers installed.
SteamVR is the only OpenXR runtime supported. 8089 will attempt to use it even if it isn't your default, but if you run into problems, check here.
VR only supported on Windows. Linux binaries are provided (and tested working on some distros) but support is low. Mac support has been dropped since that platform doesn't support Vulkan (MoltenVK has been unreliable).

- Play as you Want: Focus on certain skills like Guns, Melee or Stealth. Or, be a Leader with followers doing the work for you!
- VR Support: Built for VR, while still supporting traditional gameplay with a keyboard + mouse. Uses OpenXR (SteamVR runtime supported). Want to adjust your held angle? Comfort mode? Keybinds? Swap hands? All there in options!
- Lots of Special Abilities: Different armor provides abilities, like Invisibility, Grappling Hooks, Teleporting, Bullet Time, Tether Beams and more...
- Unique Loot Properties: Watch out, some drops might be infected! Also, if your Engineering skill is low, you'll have to Analyze what things do
- Customize Equipment: Weapons & armor have module slots to program. Make fast-firing blasters, grenade launchers, deadly beams, explosive and homing shotguns...

- Tricky AI: Enemies (and friendly units) group together, listen closely and convey information. Counter by paying close attention to your detection meter!

After playing 3089 (and, in spirit, 5089) and not liking it, I wanted to give a fair shake to the developers latest creation in the series. Unfortunately, a game with such heavy reliance on procedural generation needs a LOT more aspects to the game to be worth it. As it stands, progressing through the game feels, quite frankly, meaningless. There are "story milestones" you reach to progress through the increasingly difficult zones, but increased difficulty is more enemy numbers go up, your numbers go down, until you get your numbers back up to snuff. AI doesn't get smarter, new equipment doesnt different additional stats, missions don't get varied from what you've already seen... etc. It's all the same grind with higher numbers and no meaningful progress. Do the exact same thing you were doing a few zones ago, and keep doing it. I found guns to be awful to use in general, whether I made one myself with various parts, or used pre-made ones in gun shops, even with proper gun skill. Melee and grapple-hook'ing everywhere is the only reason i stuck with the game as long as I could. I also don't know why there was a design decision nerf ships and vehicles into the ground. Has a constant very annoying fake vsync tearing effect that you don't see in the game-play videos. No way to disable. I want to rip my eyes out after 45 minutes. Requesting refund3 found this helpful

Honestly, I had great fun playing this. I found it properly engaging how you go from rags, to riches, back to rags as you push forward in levels. There's a bunch of stuff that's janky, but it's a solo dev - of course it's going to be janky. But the core of it is 100% solid. Made me look forward to playing it in VR, which is bloody well saying something too.
