Adrift: In the Corners of Time

I am in a good mood so I am going to write a review. This game was chill. I had seen it on a youtube channel but loved the vibe so much I ended up seeking it out. Feels literally like a game made by artist and it shows for good and bad. First the good. Music is so calming, the artistic style of the world is so cool, whilst clearly badly rendered, has this weird unsettling vibe is pitch perfectly with its "dead town at dusk". The game is about running around in an area shooting a bunch of demons and looking for a key to unlock the next chunk of area. It's all just very chillaxing. I do like what the did with the weird twisty, winding roads. I do wish there was more to explore and a story behind all the areas. The bad. The game part of the game is not good. Its got awful combat which thankfully doesn't really challenge you outside of an awful smaller enemy type which needs to be cheesed. Collisions in combat is awful. Nothing is explained properly. So basically this game is slop, its sloppily made but I would definitely support the developers because I love the vibe and what they were going for and I hope they go on to make another and improve on what they had done. Beautiful and tight little game for 4 bucks, you can't go wrong here. Adrift has a sublime and unique art style that harkens to PS2 glory days and early 2000's RPG's but doesn't feel lesser for it by any means. I was expecting to just enjoy a playable world of artworks but I was pleasantly surprised by the depth of combat, items, and player abilities. There are some great encounters with enemies and traps and some of the fights are truly difficult. From a game design angle I also like that they guide you with audio and visual cues rather than blatant arrows or tutorial texts, but it wasn't confusing. I also didn't get lost much even with the mechanic of having to find keys and return to locked areas because they did a good job with pathing in an intuitive way and having distinct landmarks. It's a quick game at probably an hour to an hour and a half but there's certainly replay value, especially with the local split screen versus mode. Overall I found Adrift to be relaxing, mesmerizing and a great time. If you've read this far I think you will too.
