ALPEN GHOUL: Prologue

"ALPEN GHOUL: Prologue" is not a game. It's an advertisement for a product called "Alpen Ghoul". Alpen Ghoul is unreleased and may never be (this advert for the product came out a year and a half ago, and the luke warm reception hasn't given the developers much incentive to bother finishing it). It's supposed to be some kind of die-and-retry horror jumpscare game, but it looks a lot more like yet another asset flip to me. But this isn't completely relevant because this is not Alpen Ghoul, it's just an advertisment for it, so it's not correct to try to review that completely distinct product. We must instead review this for what it is... an advertisement. If you enjoy advertisements, you can consume them for free on the web or on Youtube without needing to add them to your game library, download them, and then launch the advertising. It's impossible in a general sense to recommend people should do that over playing real, full games on Steam, and that applies here with "ALPEN GHOUL: Prologue" too. This is only free in the same way that adverts on Youtube and banner ads in your browser are. This is a game demo that's been dumped on Steam to advertise another Steam store page…

oooooog.... it has so much potential.... quite unfinished but still worth a shot, especially since it's free. there are a couple issues i had with the stealth system, like how difficult it is to keep track of the yeti and how he's designed to keep within a certain distance of you, so if you get to far away he'll just sprint up to you. it would also be cool if there was a map that was progressively filled out the more you explore

a horror game with skill expression. as a fan of frictional games (amnesia, soma, and others) and old school resident evil, it's a treat to play a horror game that expects something out of the player mechanically. your choices aren't resource management, it's where you decide to go when things get heated and your ability to piece the movement mechanics together. i can't say enough good things about this demo because if you are a horror fan, there is nothing that expects this much of you while also returning it. ps. if you're a movement fps fan (bhop, surf, etc.) this is for you.

The game is very small, and difficult, but it's really only until you figure out what to do for both those issues, let me explain: The game being small: The game will feel massive at first, you will have no clue what to do and find endless new areas, but that's really only until you figure out how it's able to be beaten. The game being difficult: It may seem like you're never able to survive or win, but that's only really until you figure out tactics to use to survive for longer, or even forever, and then figure out how to safely explore the map and make your way to the end.
