Alpha & Beta Review: It’s Free, It’s Fun, It’s Frustrating Alpha & Beta is a tough 2D platformer with a lot of heart. It’s got charming pixel art, a simple but fun story about two rival brothers, and a relaxing piano soundtrack—which is ironic, because this game will absolutely stress you out. With 9 worlds, 36 levels, and 8 boss fights, there’s plenty to do. And hey, it’s free! Now for the downside: the controls can be stiff, making jumps harder than they should be. You also have to collect every gold coin to progress, which can turn fun levels into tedious scavenger hunts. And there are some bugs—like levels relocking themselves—because apparently, the game doesn’t trust you. Still, it’s free, so what do you have to lose? If you love a challenge and don’t mind a little jank, give it a shot. If not, at least you didn’t waste any money. Free pain is still pain.
