About Barback
Welcome to Neo-Chicago nightclub, a popular Chicago venue that has been open since 1979. Now meet Dann, the club's Barback. Dann is tasked to get the club ready to open by stocking the beer, filling up the ice coolers, and other various tasks. It seemed like an ordinary job until one day, the vile Rat King who rules the Rat Kingdom deep below the city decided to send his army of rats to the surface to invade the nightclub. Now Dann has to rid Neo of these pests so that the club can open up for business and if he fails, he'll get fired! Can you help Dann get through his workweek and rid the club of these pests?Barback is a retro 1980s style arcade overhead run n' gun where the player has the freedom to run around the nightclub defeating various monsters and avoiding traps while collecting items to obtain points. The player must search the club for a key that will allow the player to move to the next section of the game. The overall goal is to play through the main character's workweek at the nightclub and defeat the vile rat king. Each stage is broken down into 3 parts and new enemies and traps appear as the player progresses through the game. The game also has various secret areas where the player can obtain extra lives and also get an extra life when obtaining a score of 30,000 points. The game was designed with NESmaker. It was also designed to play like a game that was released back in the 1980s. The only difference is the game has an actual ending before looping so that the main character gets rewarded instead of just receiving a "game over" screen. The gameplay is pretty straight forward and easy enough to get through without too much frustration.

this feels just like a classic era NES game. it was a lot of fun. it also did a pretty great job of bringing back memories of neo.. ...the layout of the club, dance floor, bathrooms, dj booth and all. i'm so happy this game exists. :)2 found this helpful
Haven't gotten a lot of time in game yet, but I love the feel. Played on Steam Deck without much issue. Soundtrack is great. The game play is really easy to pickup and start slingin bottles!2 found this helpful
Awesome little 80's style NES game. If you love the old platforms from the old style NES, you will love Barback! I find this game challenging but yet not to challenging. Just enough to make you want to come back to see if you can finish the game! Loving it so far!2 found this helpful
Brutal but rocking tunes, really brings that old NES feel2 found this helpful
This is a fantastic 8 bit arcade style shoot em up! reminds me alot of smash tv. Soundtrack is an absolute banger! Really designed well. Game has a really cool art design and the atmosphere makes me want to drink a beer as it does a great job creating the feeling of being in old dive bar from the 80s!! Has a solid difficulty curve but not over the top! Looking forward to see what else the dev does but if your into 8 bit games made for the NES that have been ported to steam then you NEED to play this.2 found this helpful
Amusing little game, does as advertised. If I had to describe it, I'd say think of somewhere in between Fester's Quest and a more purely 80s arcade game where you complete a level, then the next one has the colors changed and some new enemies. As it was meant to be a little nostalgia project, I don't imagine it'll see any changes outside that scope, but there's a good core here. The bar layouts change in each level(lol @ DIE barrels), but it could be expanded on. More secret rooms(I did find that 1up room), maybe even secret levels or branch levels(i.e. go in the toilet, end up in a sewer section as an alternate route out the back door, or even something like "Tuesday: 2am" that introduces the puke puddle enemies sooner that can be accessed as a dangerous bonus round between days. Most things aside from the key seemed to just be for score; while serious scoring wasn't the intent, it'd probably be better to make those floor pickups one time things(and lend more reason to have secret areas that might have better stuff). The HUD should probably display whether or not you have the key(cheat and make it a changed background tile so you don't eat an extra sprite for it). It's also…1 found this helpful
