About BatMUD
There's a MUD on Steam.
Forge artifacts of power. Sail to faraway lands. Build a city in your name.
Establish your legacy. Perish, and be born anew.
See guilds fall, races become extinct - or be one to nurture them.
Explore the realm and roam free.
Hone your craft, by forge or by arcane arts, and empower yourself - or others, for a price.

BatMUD is a text-based medieval fantasy game with an extremely rich set of features.
We offer a significant player to player commerce system; and experienced players can build their own items, including seafaring vessels and even cities. Play anything you wish; build your character, reincarnate. Find locked races and establish secret societies. Enjoy the massive open realm, roam free. Create, trade, quest, amass wealth and equipment. Make friends within the vibrant and colourful player community.
A detailed combat system, familiars, mounts and hundreds of custom zones built over 25 years. Constantly evolving, always under further development. BatMUD is the predecessor of MMOs and a hidden jewel of the Internet.
Come, become a newbie once again.

I finally feel compelled to write a review of BatMUD after all of my time spent with it, and the community. I will start this by saying that I began BatMUD with ZERO nostalgia factor involved (aside from Zork influence.) I am young, especially young for the MUD playerbases, but I still found a sense of enjoyment and infatuation when it came to BatMUD. What you are essentially paying for here, is the client for the game. Is it worth it? At $5? Absolutely. The support and features that have been added on the client side are extremely helpful and worth it for newbies. If you eventually reach a point where you feel there "isn't enough" I can assure you that there are plugins you can add yourself. You could even make your own! Many people point out the Task Points situation. The "pay-to-win" where donating "levels" your character by allowing a player to spend given points from payments to put into their character. And of course, it's an incentive. All companies need to make money. The game needs to stay afloat some how. But it is BY NO MEANS required, or shoved in the face of the player. NOR IS IT SIGNIFICANT IN THE GRAND SCHEME OF THE GAME. There is no one running around 10 times st…1 found this helpful
My experience (started playing in 1998): +HUGE world to explore +Lore is exeptional and humorous +Friendly playerbase +Much to do -Maybe too much to do -Harsh learning curve for beginners -Questing can be boring due learning the right syntaxes -Sucks all of your free time when you start liking the game If text based game does not scare you I dare to try BatMUD. It rocks hard.1 found this helpful
Font is too small on anything that is 1440 or over. I'm sure the game is great but you can play it for free on mud clients. I was hoping to play on this client since it makes things more smooth to play but, unfortunately, it is just too small to read anything.
If you enjoy MUDs, this is a solid MUD. One of the best systems for displaying combat information I have seen, the GUI is nice but the configuration options are off the hook,
A Living Legend of MMORPGs BatMUD isn’t just a game—it’s a piece of gaming history that’s still very much alive. Running continuously since 1990, this text-based medieval fantasy MMO offers a depth and complexity that most modern games don’t even attempt. The world is massive, hand-crafted, and constantly evolving, with developers actively updating systems, content, and balance decades after launch. That alone is wild. If you enjoy rich lore, meaningful character progression, intricate class systems, and true freedom in how you play, BatMUD delivers in spades. The mechanics go far beyond simple command-typing: combat, magic, crafting, exploration, politics, guilds, and player interaction all have real depth and long-term consequences. The community is another huge strength. Veteran players are passionate, knowledgeable, and surprisingly welcoming to newcomers willing to learn. There’s a real sense of shared history here—you’re stepping into a world that’s been shaped by players for over 30 years. Yes, it’s text-based, and yes, there’s a learning curve—but if you push past that, you’ll find one of the most detailed and rewarding fantasy MMOs ever made. No flashy graphics needed…
Played this game over 30 years like a huge portion of the players. Best text-based MMO RPG there is in my opinion.
