Broken Metal

tldr this game is a beautiful (and free) little iso strategy game, perfect to take up a few hours of your day. I wish I could play it on my phone, it'd be great lovely little iso strategy game. it's not terribly hard, it's got good sounds, cute and pretty sprites, and some good thematic kevin macleod music. with the rigid attack areas and the separation of movement and attacking and abilities as actions, I'd say the closest comparison is Into The Breach as far as core gameplay goes. it gets a little samey after 20 or so floors but there keep being new enemy types and with the abilities your units can get it stays very fun for a while. it strikes a really good balance between feeling powerful and being worried when you get cornered or surrounded. also it's free lmao this is pretty awesome. the dev seems to be missing in action lately but I hope he's still making cool stuff somewhere.

"Broken Metal" is kinda like if you took X-Com, removed the cool sinister UFO conspiracy theme, removed the base building, replaced all the graphics with pixelcrap of the lowest order, and stripped out anything else that might be fun, too. What you're left with is a turn based tactical with zero joy and quality so bad you'll wonder if PC gaming was worth it at all. What do you do in the game? Plod through samey procgen encounters endlessly. That's it, that's all there is to it. Surviving units get to upgrade their skills. This features really godawful pixelcrap "art" instead of real graphics. It's hard to say if this was because the developer didn't have the skill to do the job of creating 3D visuals, or couldn't afford to hire someone who does, but it also doesn't matter. What matters is that this looks much worse than most other games because of that decision, and that's a major deterrent to gamers. Games like Terraria and Stardew Valley succeeded [i]despite[/i] the bad graphics, not because of them. My only real problem is the scaling for everything, the info for each enemy and character usually ends up overlaying the board so I can see of click on it, and when I make the pixel scaling lower, I can't see anything cause It's so small. Other then that, it's well worth sitting down and playing.

Wonderful tactical combat with punishing AI. Good music, great character building elements. Gets really difficult in later rounds. Each time you play character creation is different which makes each playthrough unique.
