STORYLINE
In a village far, far away, a dull peasant named Rufus was living an ordinary life. The boss of the house was his wife, Brunilde, a boisterously smart and funny woman that you wouldn’t exactly call “pretty”. Life was nice and happy in the village, until one day, awakened by some magical mistake, the Evil One started to spread his minions around town, performing hideous acts against the people. The worst of which was the kidnapping of Brunilde. She was torn from Rufus’ hands and put in a prison at the Evil One’s castle. Transformed into a blondie duck-faced doll girl, she now spends all her time staring at herself in a small handheld mirror.

Determined to win her back, Rufus made a helmet out of a bucket and picked a broom as a weapon. Everybody now calls him the CLUNKY HERO, but he might be the only hope to defeat the evil one that no one wants to call by name. Rufus is now on his journey to save his wife and the whole village!

One of the worst metroidvanias I've ever played, and I've played well over a hundred of them. Bad combat, bad hitboxes, bad level design filled with tiny corridors packed with enemies you can't avoid. The combat is so boring you just end up damage boosting through many of the enemies, especially as the game goes on, as there's simply no reason to fight them. The writing is absolutely atrocious. Forgettable music. Your character is *profoundly* unlikable. Even though it looks terrible, it also runs terrible (I don't have a dedicated GPU right now). It's so, so, so bad. Sorry devs, if you're reading this... but this game misses the mark in every single possible way.

Clunky Hero is a 2D side-scrolling adventure that blends light Metroidvania structure with RPG elements and a strong emphasis on self-aware comedy. Developed and published by Chaosmonger Studio, the game introduces players to Rufus, an awkward, bucket-helmeted hero whose quest to rescue his kidnapped wife quickly spirals into a deliberately ridiculous fantasy journey. From the outset, the game makes it clear that it values humor and personality just as much as mechanics, leaning into parody, exaggerated characters, and frequent fourth-wall breaks to establish a tone that is playful, irreverent, and intentionally unpolished. Exploration forms the backbone of the experience, with interconnected areas gradually opening up as Rufus gains new abilities. Classic movement upgrades such as double jumps, wall interactions, and ranged attacks allow players to revisit earlier locations and access previously unreachable paths. This sense of progression is familiar and comfortable for fans of the genre, offering moments of satisfaction when a newly unlocked skill reveals hidden secrets or side objectives. However, the world design tends to be more segmented than seamless, and navigation can fe…

I had a decent time with this one. The platforming can be tougher than it first appears, which kept me more engaged than I expected. Some sections feel a bit uneven, but figuring them out was satisfying. It did not completely hook me, and at times it felt more average than amazing. Still, it has enough personality and challenge that I would give it a thumbs up.

Horrible game design choices. Game keep crashing at Foggy Lake when defeating enemies in pool. You could make your weapon disappear and not able to equip it anymore. Insane enemy hitbox and milliseconds iframe. Mindless traps purposefully placed inorganically. Insane enemy reaction if you fall from above and the enemy AI instant detect and shoot at you. Horrible camera and have to manual self-correct it often. Dash with a hidden cooldown timer with no visible cue. Boss hit frames lingers even after it's animation ended. Seems like Little Boy Lover logo is found on the tip of Super Cool Sword.

It sure is clunky. And there's definitely a hero. Enjoyable, for all its jank, but don't expect to feel deeply satisfied or anything. It did make me feel something. I just have no idea what that is.

A good metroidvania that sometimes gets a little repetitive. 8/10 Buckets on Head
