About Descent: Legends of the Dark

*A companion app for the Descent: Legends of the Dark board game from Fantasy Flight Games.

Forge your own legend together with your friends as you adventure across the vibrant fantasy realm of Terrinoth! Powered by its fully integrated free companion app, Descent: Legends of the Dark puts you in the role of a budding hero with their own playstyle and abilities. Together with your unlikely companions, you’ll begin an unexpected adventure for one to four players!

To play the Descent: Legends of the Dark board game, one player must download the free Descent: Legends of the Dark app on a compatible device. This companion app determines the setup of each quest, tracks your party’s inventory, skills, progress, and resolves combat while telling a narrative story of our heroes braving the exciting forests, dangerous dungeons, and majestic landscapes of Terrinoth. The app also lets the heroes save their campaign, allowing them to complete it over the course of several gaming sessions.

"Descent: Legends of the Dark" isn't a game. Real games require "gameplay", in the form of game loops and gamelike interaction, which is absent here. Rather than functioning as a game, "Descent: Legends of the Dark" is just a software application that you need to download to use to track your progress in a board game. Now, it should go without saying, but if you design a board game so badly that you can't play it without a mobile app, you have failed at the basic premise of designing a board game. You can't "play" this without the boardgame, it is not a game itself, just a tracking app. It's also irrelevant to discuss whether Descent is a decent board game or not, because this is not that game. To clarify why this isn't a game in more precise terms, a "game loop" is the core cycle of interaction and feedback between a player and the game itself, and this garbage doesn't have one. An obvious example of a game loop would be in games like Forza, where you drive a car in a circle. If you're faster and more skillful than the other drivers, you get rewarded for first place, and you repeat that test of your skill again with each race. Even open world/sandbox games like Mine…

Well made addition to the board game, board game difficulty and mechanics aside this is a really good companion and adds a lot of fun to the board experience

Outstanding cooperative game. I don't have to be a DM or Overlord as the app does it all. Easy to understand and fun to play over and over with different character groups

Literally the greatest app driven board game of all time!!! Decent story with strong writing and characters Fun gameplay with all the enemies and damage tracked by the app If you ever wanted to play D&D without a DM, this is the only good way to do it!

Started a new gaming group and we needed something solid to dig our teeth into. And this fits the bill! We have had a few gaming sessions and so far we are 200% into the game. I think we overcame one of the major complaints, that some had, by putting a 55" curved TV on the end of our gaming table and ran the Steam app off of a laptop connected to that. Complete game changer. I cant imagine trying to play this on a phone. The mini's the game came with are just incredible. I think my biggest obstacle is going to be getting these painted fast enough to keep up with the game. Their quality demands them to be painted way past "table top ready". The app does a great job of moving the game along without being too intrusive. It also does a great job of keeping track of all the small loot that is used in towns for crafting or upgrades. I know some play this solo but if you are able to try to get a group together. Amazing game supported by a well thought out app that plays its role quite nicely . Two Thumbs up.
