This is not just a chess game; it's a philosophical horror masterpiece. The concept of a self-playing chessboard that dictates a dark narrative is genius. The gothic atmosphere, multiple endings, and asymmetric sandbox create an experience that is both dread-ful and utterly captivating. A must-play for those seeking something truly different.4 found this helpful
Dread Chess is less about chess and more about fate, horror, and philosophical choices. The game mixes eerie pixel art, cryptic dialogue, tarot mechanics, and unfair “self-playing” chess into a strange but memorable experience. Its biggest strength is atmosphere. Everything feels cursed, mysterious, and intentionally unsettling. The hidden endings and obscure secrets make exploration rewarding, especially if you enjoy experimental indie horror. It can be confusing at times, and players looking for normal chess gameplay probably won’t enjoy it. But if you like surreal psychological games with dark themes, Dread Chess stands out as something genuinely unique. Overall rating: 8.5/101 found this helpful

Fun little game that revels in being weird and unconventional. It's like watching a classic of esoteric foreign cinema, except the only subtitles available are more broken than the director's psyche, and before you can finish the film, the projector catches on fire and kills your cat (not by the flames; the cat committed to a lifestyle of poetic self-destruction fueled by an overdose of continental philosophy). Highly recommended.
