In the mid-1980s, the Hogo computer operating system was considered the next big thing. It powered cutting-edge computers by providing stunning color displays, generating amazing sound, and supporting huge 426x240 pixel display monitors. It really was the future.
And then practically overnight, Hogo OS disappeared.
What happened is one of the biggest mysteries of the 1980s. Rumors say that an evil mastermind attempted to use Hogo OS to take over the world, and was only stopped by the bumbling actions of a complete idiot. Those rumors are true.
The year is 1985. And you are that idiot.
Dum-Dum is equally a simulator and an adventure game. You must solve puzzles and decipher clues to uncover its secrets.
The interface is a full simulation of a fictional computer operating system: Hogo OS 1985 Edition. It includes everything you'd expect to find on a computer from 1985. Numerous games like Solitaire 1985 and Hogoworm Dungeon. Creativity applications like Animator and Piano Composer. Digital books, interactive stories, and features to customize your desktop. There's even a simple working BASIC programming language.
But digging a little deeper will uncover new secrets, hidden activities, and quests. Part of the fun is exploring and uncovering the many programs and features of Hogo OS.

I hate to give this game a thumbs down. The story is great and a lot of care was clearly put into it, but the actual progression is really difficult and frustrating. Nothing is intuitive, the ui is clunky, half of the things you need to do to progress only work in really specific ways that are really hard to initiate, and despite the story being that I was "so dumb I could do things no one would think of" the actual way to progress in the game is rather hard to figure out. This game has a lot of potential and if you are willing to play it with a guide, you may enjoy it. I eventually switched to one halfway through just to keep things moving. But without one it's frustrating and unintuitive. So I can't say I recommend it. The story though is hilarious. Great writing, very enjoyable. Would love to see other games from this developer in the future!
Very, very charming interface sim-style game. A bit adventure game-y in its puzzle/progression logic sometimes, but it has a generous hint system. I also thought the main actress playing the Hogo employee you talk to was really funny/engaging, which helped keep my interest as the game continued. It's definitely one of the more creative games in this increasingly popular genre.
the spider bot vent section increased my attention span by a large margin 10/10
The novelty of a fake browser game is that you're using a computer to use a computer (imagine that!) which helps offers a deep level of immersion... now that I'm thinking about it, maybe the deepest level of immersion a game can offer. Other games use the computer as proxy for an experience you cannot actually have but in a browser game, there are no character models or mechanics between you and the experience. Your mouse is the player's mouse, your actions are their actions, your body BECOMES their body. And in Dum-Dum, you become an idiot. That's really the root of the fun of the game, stepping into the role of this hapless "dum-dum" who's wandered into a game between geniuses and has to stumble their way through it with pluck and a bit of creativity. It's a really charming setup that they have a lot of fun with, and it adds some nice flavor to the standard "hacker" game play. The puzzles revolve around creative usage of the programs that are available to you and in my opinion they were all pretty intuitive- there is a built in hint system but I only had to reference it a few times, mostly just to get pointed in the right direction of an objective I'd already figured out. I haven't been playing this game for long and I already love it! every puzzle is so cool and unique and theres also a crap ton of extra content along with the fact that 'hogo CEO science #1' was really fun to read when you have an interest in divine machinery (which if you dont know is the personification of machinery/computers)
