About Dusk Hollow

Dusk Hollow follows a miner braving the dark depths of an underground cave system, all to rescue his friends who have seemingly been taken by the cave itself. Using what tools he finds around him, the protagonist has to fight against rock monsters inhabiting the recesses of the cavern. The game encourages quick thinking, with fighting hinged on using weapons found around the environment and using materials to upgrade the player’s abilities to assist in combating the creatures of the depths. The flashlight is the most important tool in the player’s arsenal, being the main way to view and traverse the level, and importantly, visibly see enemies through the darkness. Dusk Hollow features multiple levels with unique themes and mechanics that challenges the player’s use of both combat and flashlight mechanics.

✦ AI summary

Players criticize Dusk Hollow for poor graphics, unpolished visuals that look dated, and floaty, unresponsive gameplay that undermines the combat experience. The game lacks meaningful RPG elements like loot and build customization despite being marketed as an action RPG, leaving players feeling directionless, and some encounter technical glitches that block progression. A small number of players enjoy the game regardless of its shortcomings, though even positive reviews tend to be brief and noncommittal.

"Dusk Hollow" is an extraordinarly badly made top down hack and slash brawler. This is a horror game where you're a miner trying to rescue friends trapped in an underground cave system. Your actions involve combat with monsters, using found weapons and materials to upgrade your skills, and navigating the dark levels using a flashlight. Which really makes this sound a lot better than it is... RPG aspects of the game are minimal to none, it's mostly just directionless brawling with a few goals thrown in in the hopes that anyone would play long enough to see them (spoiler: Nope). The graphics aren't great, his looks like it was made in the 1990s... the game assets are awful. I mean, hooray for not using stock assets, but when the game looks even worse than stock assets, we have a totally different problem. That's understandably a turn off for a lot of gamers, and it's a big contributor to the failure of the game to attract gamers despite having no up-front cost. Gaming is a primarily visual medium, and if developers want to succeed, they must understand that it's not an area for compromise. You deserve better than compromises. On the matter of pricing and value for gamers,…

My Experience I'm honestly not sure why I tried Dusk Hollow. I likely located it while looking for games with the "Action RPG" keyword, as Action RPGs tend to be games I enjoy. But for a game in this genre, I didn't locate much in the way of loot, and didn't seem to have the ability to create any sort of build. Additionally, the game's unpleasant visuals coupled with its floaty gameplay turned me off of the experience.
