There Is No Light: Enhanced Edition

There's a lot of promising ideas here but the execution falls pretty flat. The art is wonderful, really vibe with the setting and the music. The storytelling is pretty amateurish, it confuses it cryptic with deep and there really aren't any characters other than the grim reaper analog who has exactly one joke that he keeps repeating over and over. It meanders in a bunch of different directions without actually having any solid ideas. NPCs drop in and out constantly and there's an incredibly simplistic Karma system that only really serves to frustrate anyone attempting to play "good". As usual the enemy is Catholicism, this time in a fun edgy mask, which is just kind of uninspired at this point but not offensive. It doesn't ask any hard or interesting questions nor does it give you a compelling narrative, just the usual "your kid was taken, go get revenge" schtick. The difficulty is stupid, and not "too hard" I mean poorly executed. The game does an OK job of teaching you the rules, not great but not awful, but some sequences are just a pain in the ass and have no methods for alternative solutions. Yet another game got ruined by the "soul-like" mentality. What compel game developers to think that fighting insanely fast enemies make a fun fight? (they're probably mistaking the rush of endorphin that one get after defeating an enemy with an actual sense of satisfaction? - same can be said about Dark Souls combat by the way-) . And the worst part is that the combat consist mainly of button-mashing (dash to one side of the enemy -> attack, and repeat). I'm not exaggerating, i played this game for three hours in one day and the next day my right forearm was sore because of the button-mashing. And also there's this flaw of the design of the stages' setting where you can get stuck behind an object if you dash towards it. (I quit the game and started writing this review after facing one).

The game map is too muddled. I gave the game multiple attempts, but each time the session ends with confusion about where to go next. The souls-like elements, art, and karma system are great, but completing the game without a guide could be a chore. It's more than minus then plus.

Honestly i wanted to play more to have a better view but the game does not pull me at all. While the game looks beautiful and the story seems alright i guess, there are 2 things that i cant really overlook. One is the combat. Its very bland. Hit , dodge and once in a while you use your special attack to interrupt a yellow attack. The skill tree serves to give very little things to spice things up. Even then i think its combat is something i could swallow. What i cant swallow is my second reason which is the fact that even though you have such huge and intricate maps which can branch of here and there, there is ABSOLUTELY NO REASON TO EXPLORE THEM. There are no drops to find other than papers that other than the first dont even give you additional lore. Some sort of spider dolls with no explanation on what they do or if they have any usefulness. And lastly some 1 time use heals. ( and some exp vials ) THATS IT. You really have no reason exploring what so ever other than b lining to what you have to do to progress. With how big and detailed the maps are i thought there would an incentive to explore. There Is No Light is a pretty good but frustrating Hack and Slash souls like game, but let's talk about the story. Long ago humanity was forced to flee to the underground after horrible monsters and demons took over the surface, no one has seen the outside world and centuries and now the underground world is ruled by the religious zealot known as the Hand, heretic cults and the monsters of the underground. But all that does not matter to a young man and his wife that are relaxing by the fire only for their peaceful moment to be interrupted by the Hand having attacked the young man's village killing people and kidnapping all the pregnant women or women with children as the young man attempts to stop this ritual, only to get his ass kicked. But a dark deity shows himself giving him power and training in order to take his revenge on the people that took everything from him, but this is no easy quest as he travels across the underworld and fights all kinds of horrors and monstrosities both human and inhuman as he fights way for his revenge.
