Underrated game. It's basically old-school Castlevania set in 19th century London with repentant Scrooge. Lots of variety in the types of attacks you can do once you befriend various "ghosts". Weapon variety and reach. So you can play with heavy blow, quicker light blow, or range. Lot of secret passages and hidden stuff. Slightly rough movement, but it really is a minor criticism as you won't notice it after you make some simple adjustments. Nothing to groundbreaking here but a fun game, suitable for Christmas season or any time. Suitable for Metroidvania fans. Probably an 8-10 hour game or so
Simple, Elegantly done. Very nice graphics. Music is good and unobtrusive. Honestly, I really enjoyed this game and it scratched a similar enough itch to Symphony of the Night, or any of the DS Castlevania games. Well worth the time and money.
Wow, this game was great! I put this game on my wishlist because the premise just seemed so random but so awesome at the same time. A sequel to A Christmas Carol starring Ebenezer Scrooge in a metroidvania adventure? He attacks by smacking enemies with his cane?? Sign me up! The music is Christmasy and is pretty fine for ambience but the soundtrack doesn't really stand out. The gameplay is standard metroidvania fare. You could say that the entire game itself is average at best. It's not boring nor is it going to blow any minds. But that's fine. Not all games can be 10/10s and not all games are garbage. Some just exist because they can. What I will say is that the artwork is wonderful. The characters, their portraits, and even the final battle cutscene. Beautiful work that deserves to be displayed as a poster! I read some reviews that said that they had issues with the game crashing or bugging out. For the entirety of my 11+ hour adventure, I did not experience a single crash. The only bug I encountered was Ebenezer not dropping below the water even with the water breathing ring equipped, and the fix was to simply exit the room and reenter it. It only happened once and the …
A pretty good metroidvania game if you know what to expect: a 10-12 hour long, old school, Symphony of the Night-esque adventure with a charming 2D art style that aims to evoke a cozy, Christmassy feel. This the game absolutely succeeds at. There are a few bugs, none of them game breaking but most of them annoying. The worst of these are related to input as in sometimes the attack button can become non-functional (very fun in a game where you're constantly pressing X), occasionally the "selected item" higlight / cursor won't appear in the inventory menus with a controller so you have to use the mouse to make it appear etc. In general the inputs doesn't feel particularly well programmed, the game can feel a bit sluggish in its response. Some of that seems to be by design which is strange considering that all the titles that this game was inspired by have crisp, fast inputs. Story wise if you like A Christmas Carol then what's here will most likely work for you: the themes are similar and the plot is fine for a game like this. The ending is a bit too abrupt though and the lack of voice acting hurts the few FMVs that the game has. In its current state I feel that the game is a bit …
I started to play this game during the holydays, unfortunately I had to interrupt momentarily, finally I finished today 25 of January. Its a very cozy M-Vania, the challenge is not too hard, if you equip and use all the tools properly. The art is beautiful and always is a pleasure to see the backgrounds from time to time, the characters are beatifully designed and I wouldnt mind to see an animated adaptation of this game (seriously) A ton of tools to equip and a surprising amount of ghosts to use to attack and enviromental progress (more on that later) Reading other comments I saw that a lot of people had problems locking themselves at one point on the map and couldnt progress, that never happened to me, no glitches or crashes. However, there are a few things that I wish where a bit different: -The game has a ton of tools to equip, but only 4 notches to equip them (if there is a way to increase them, didnt find it) the game would not hurt if it allows more tools to equip. -The ghosts offer passive skills (double jump, ballon bouncing, floating, etc) and action skills (attack with a steel ball which also works to break walls horizontally, for example) the pro…
Ender Christmas One year after his famous visitation by the Three Christmas Ghosts, Ebeneezer Scrooge is getting ready for another holiday. But another spirit comes to him- and begs for his help. An industrialist called Caspar Malthus, scion of a rich family, is threatening the London's underclasses. A year ago, he also was given 3 visions- but something went wrong. Now, the spirits of restless London ask for Ebeneezer's help to turn Caspar away from evil. The game is a fairly typical metroidvania. As Ebeneezer platforms around and smashes hostile ghosts and Malthus' thugs with his cane, he gains spirit energy, which can be used to call upon help of friendly spitits. Attacks are directional, and can still be blocked by shielded enemies, so timing matters. As you progress through the game, you meet with more spirits, most of whom offer you some fetch quest before joining you. Each one has a challenge ( kill X enemies with their attacks, or do Y total damage) which boost the effect of the skill. A few of these allow you to smash brittle walls, and help to access secret areas, but most are purely for combat. The other type of friendly spirits boost Ebeneezer's traversal, a…
