nice coffeebreak roguelike with polished retro presentation and lots of cute and humorous details fast jrpg combat works well as an alternative to tile bumping possibly my favorite casual/accessible roguelike

UPDATE 1/10/22: The developer has been making some consistent updates - see the comments on this review for more! Equin 2 is a bit of a mixed bag: it presents an interesting new twist on the traditional roguelike genre, but I fear that it simultaneously makes a few tragic missteps that invoke some frustration along the way. It feels largely familiar: grid-based maps, turn-based movement, and randomized dungeons. However, combat is delivered via a traditional menu-style turn-based system on a separate screen. Combat is serviceable - you'll have 4-6 skills to use at any given time, so there's not a surplus of depth here. The fundamentals feel nice enough, but I feel there's room for improvement in two key areas: 1. RNG and difficulty spikes come absolutely out of nowhere, blind-siding the player. I had multiple runs in which I was progressing nicely, not having particular difficulty with any enemy, and was then suddenly thrust into battle with a new enemy which effectively killed me in one hit. It just felt very unnatural and unfair in a way that I couldn't have been prepared for. 2. The joy of finding loot is largely diminished here - there aren't many randomized drops, so search…

This game is a lot of fun and is clearly an all-round improvement from the first game, it is easy to learn and has a good amount of depth below the surface. The balancing of certain items could be improved, and when playing as a wizard if you pick the ice spell the rest of the game becomes rather easy. It also seems like money is a little too easy to get as I rarely found myself needing more of it, and the punishment for running out of food is perhaps not as severe as it should be (considering your food level is reset every area). Also some more options (like the ability to change sound and music volume separately) would be appreciated. But overall the game is really good and a definite recommend considering how low the price is.

If you've played the first Equin, you'll be blown away at the amount of new features and content this game offers, definitely one of the best sequels to a game I've ever played! It's created by a single dev that basically did it all, even the music and is a super kind dude that definitely deserves the love & support too. At first glance, you might think not a whole lot is going on but let me tell you this game is has a lot of depth to it! Starting out, things are relatively easy and straight forward but as you get further in and start leveling up, you'll be presented with profound choices in terms of build creation and how you setup your character. Pair that with the many weapons/equipment you can find, there's a lot of different strategies to explore. There's item sets now too so that really adds some flavor to your runs too. Serviceable indie roguelike, although it suffers from QoL and unfair difficulty spikes. + Five characters with stat differences and some seperate gimmicks (such as wizard scrapping items to gain xp) + Fairly simple to play but requires knowledge to beat successfully + Random floor effects add some replayability (such as level having a lot of water) * Music is alright - Lots of "gotcha!" moments where you fight a new enemy or interact with a new event only to get effectively killed instantly because you had no idea what to expect.
