I thought the game would end like the opening image, on a rooftop in the rain, but it ended up being more beautiful than I expected. While it does leave you with a message to reflect on suicide, the story makes it clear that there's room for books, leisure, and other things, but that medication comes first when it comes to depression. It frames depression as an illness, not something to be romanticized.

Freud Gate is a compact psychological adventure that places emotional interpretation ahead of conventional action. Developed by Sailors Moon Studios and published by Sailors Moon, it presents an interactive story centered on dreams, depression, isolation, and redemption. Its premise uses the idea of a closed door as a metaphor for the barriers separating a suffering person from those attempting to understand them. Rather than playing a warrior or traditional hero, the player assumes the role of a spiritual mentor trying to reach a troubled girl and discover what lies behind the emotional walls she has constructed. Freud Gate is a strange little story game that focuses much more on atmosphere and ideas than traditional gameplay. I play as a spiritual mentor who enters the mind of a depressed girl and tries to help her find a way through what she is dealing with. The game switches between the real world and a much more surreal imaginary world, and I spend most of my time exploring, solving puzzles and trying to understand what is actually happening. It is definitely not a normal RPG despite being listed in that genre, and I think it works better when I treat it as a short interactive story. The thing I like most is the way the game uses the imaginary world to represent the girl's mental state. The strange environments and dreamlike sections give the story a more unusual feeling than simply having characters explain everything through dialogue. I have to explore each area and work out different puzzles before I can move forward, and some decisions can lead me towards different endings.
