Hack Run ZERO is a strange little adventure game that is almost entirely built around pretending I am sitting at an old computer terminal. Instead of walking around a normal game world, I have to type commands into a DOS and Unix style interface and work my way through different computer accounts. The story starts with a ransom message involving someone close to me, and I have to follow the kidnapper's instructions while digging deeper into a secretive organisation. It is a very unusual way of telling a story, and I like that the game commits fully to the idea rather than adding a normal adventure section on top. The actual gameplay is mostly about exploring the systems and figuring out what commands I can use. I move between accounts, read messages and files, search for information and use what I discover to work out where I need to go next. There are over 70 levels, so there is a lot more to the game than the basic idea might suggest. I like the feeling of gradually understanding how the systems work because the game does not hand me a traditional map or quest marker. I have to pay attention and remember what I find.
