Heavy Memories is a game that surprised me with how much atmosphere it manages to get out of a simple tank shooter. I play through the memories of a tank crew member and relive important moments from his military service, with each memory becoming another dangerous battlefield. I liked the idea because the arcade action is simple on the surface, but the story gives the battles a darker emotional context. The gameplay is built around classic top down tank combat. I drive around the map, fire at enemies and use the environment to protect myself from incoming attacks. The destructible walls are one of my favorite parts because they make the battlefields feel more dynamic than a normal fixed arena. I enjoyed breaking through obstacles when it opened up a better route or gave me a safer position. The powerups also help keep the combat moving. Finding useful upgrades can quickly change the situation, especially when I am surrounded by enemy tanks or dealing with a more difficult section. "Heavy Memories" is a 2D top down retro pixel (sigh) ripoff of Battle City, an ancient home console game, and it's very poorly done, with an academic and irrelevant question existing over what's the worst here, the graphics, or the gameplay. No matter which side wins, we all lost. What do you do in the game? It's a simplistic top down shooter with a bit of VN style narrative bolted on, that nobody asked for or wanted. The game is really simple and unambitious in terms of implementation, more of a tech demo or one of those cases where an amateur developer spends $100 to publish something on Steam Direct to see if it's possible. Yes, obviously it's possible. A proof of concept, tech demo, or something that's less than a little blip on the radar isn't offering anything truly valuable to gamers. This features really godawful pixelcrap "art" instead of real graphics. It's hard to say if this was because the developer didn't have the skill to do the job of creating 3D visuals, or couldn't afford to hire someone who does, but it also doesn't matter. What matters is that this looks much worse than most other games because of that decision, and that's a major deterrent to gamers. …
