Humanity Must Perish

I wish there was an option to leave a mixed review... Interesting message, good story and even somewhat funny jokes. But a runtime of about an hour, achievements given for nothing and only one instance where you need to make a choice in the entire story. I might replay the evening part to choose a different ending and get the last achievement, but I'm not sure if I will bother. Thank goodness this is free, so you can just as well try it.

Humanity Must Perish is a compact comedic visual novel built around an amusingly extreme question: should humanity be allowed to continue existing? Developed and published by Zetsubou, the story places that decision in the hands of Kyuu, an android created to protect Earth from the damage caused by mankind. Unfortunately for humanity, her initial calculations produce only two acceptable solutions: extermination or enslavement. This grim premise might sound like the foundation for a bleak science-fiction drama, but the game instead uses it to create an eccentric mixture of comedy, social commentary, and light philosophical reflection. Kyuu is easily the strongest element of the experience. She approaches human society with the ruthless logic of a machine and has little patience for the contradictions, stupidity, selfishness, and bizarre habits she observes. Before she can implement her plan to eliminate mankind, however, her creator challenges her to spend a day interacting with ordinary people. Humanity Must Perish is a short visual novel with a pretty funny idea behind it. I play as Kyuu, an android whose job is to figure out how to save Earth from humanity. After repeatedly coming to the conclusion that humans are the problem, she is given one final chance to judge us properly by spending a day around ordinary people. I like the setup because it gives the whole story a simple question to work towards. Is humanity actually worth saving, or would the planet be better off without us? The best part for me is Kyuu herself. She is very blunt, logical and pessimistic, so watching her try to understand normal human behaviour creates a lot of the comedy. The people she meets are deliberately strange, and Kyuu often interprets situations in a very literal way. I like that the humour comes from the difference between how an android sees something and how a normal person would understand it. It also gives the story a little more personality than a standard science fiction story about robots deciding whether humans deserve to survive. This should reeeeally be labelled as a fetch NSFW VN or at least mention sexual undertones. It's disturbing that it isn't mentioned at all in the tags or description because it feels like it's trying to dupe people.

An enjoyable brief visual novel depicting a computer's assessment of humanity. Takes less than one hour to read through and it's free.
