In the Pause Between the Ringing is a short experimental adventure that approaches interactive storytelling from an artistic and literary perspective rather than following the familiar structure of a conventional video game. Developed and published by Studio Oleomingus, the project belongs to the studio’s wider Somewhere universe, a collection of unusual interactive works concerned with architecture, history, memory, fiction, and the complicated relationship between places and the people who inhabit them. Instead of offering combat, elaborate puzzles, character progression, or other traditional systems, this game invites the player to explore an imaginative interpretation of telecommunications and Indian history. The result feels closer to walking through an interactive piece of magical-realist literature than completing a typical adventure game. The story revolves around an inventor named Iqbal and the peculiar idea of India’s first telephone mines. Iqbal is waiting for a telephone call, but this seemingly ordinary situation becomes the foundation for an increasingly strange journey through the history and mythology surrounding communication technology. I would recommend it for sure if you like Annapurna Interactive games. Colorful and cinematic, and not a long game either. More of a museum exhibit I guess?
