RPG Maker strikes again! "凯尔文 - Kelvin And The Chateau" is one of hundreds of low effort retro-pixel RPG Maker asset/construction kit flips spamming the Steam catalog, made with the RPG Maker video game construction kit... in their own words, "Our easy to use tools are simple enough for a child." Like all RPG Maker "games", this is essentially a bunch of low quality/canned assets from RPG Maker coupled with a cringeworthy high school anime club fan fiction. Notably, the "developer" couldn't work out how to use RPG Maker to make a JRPG (the only thing it can do, and it's terrible at it). Instead, we have an extremely badly made adventure/e-book with some cringey writing about the authors pretend friends keeping secrets from him, and the authors relationship with his mother (we don't need to know, seriously!) all told through the remarkable crapfest of an RPG Maker engine asset flip. As with all RPG Maker games, the poor quality engine displays badly in fullscreen and doesn't have full HD support or any graphics tweaking options, making this unacceptable for any dedicated modern PC gamer. I picked this up for free and it was an absolute delight. Don't go in expecting a massive, 20-hour epic. This is a short, sweet, and focused puzzle-platformer that you can finish in an afternoon. The art style is gorgeous – it feels like playing through a beautiful, hand-painted storybook. The music is peaceful and perfectly sets the tone. The puzzles aren't super difficult, but they are clever and satisfying to solve. It's more about the atmosphere and the journey than extreme challenge. My only real complaint is that I wish it was longer! The story is simple but touching, and Kelvin is a very endearing character. It's a perfect game to relax with after a long day.
