Helen knows little about who she is―or even where she is―and she's dying to find out more. Stranded on a floating island with a labyrinthine castle just begging to be explored, Helen lets her curiosity get the better of her. Fortunately for Helen, she's more than capable of taking care of herself.
Armed with a plethora of weapons she finds along the way on her journey, Helen must battle monsters, collect new equipment, and uncover the many secrets of her mysterious home.
Helen spends the game fighting on her own, and she wouldn't have it any other way. Using the game’s unique 1-on-1 combat system, Helen can collect weapons and toggle between them during battle as the situation dictates.
Take advantage of the passage of time and knowledge of your opponents to quickly swap in the right weapon for the job and finish off your foes before they have the chance to react.

Enhance weapons using experience points collected from defeated enemies, collect new weapons hidden deep inside the labyrinth, and put together the ultimate arsenal.
Equip and upgrade weapons of all shapes and sizes―from bows and shields, to broadswords and devastating magic spells. Learning when to use each weapon is the ultimate key to victory.

Death is not the End.

Death can come swiftly in the world of Helen's Mysterious Castle―but it's not the end of the adventure. Every time Helen perishes, she'll reawaken in the cabin with a piping hot Salisbury steak ready to be eaten. Gobbling up this delicious meal will grant a permanent increase to her lifeline, rendering otherwise-unbeatable foes just a little bit easier.

I discovered this game through a Youtube video titled something like "This $2 RPG Outclasses AAA RPGs" focusing on this game's combat system, and I rolled my eyes at it (the video, not Helen) because dawg it's just Cinnamon Toast TurnOrder, the Action Speed you can see, that's nothing too crazy. Though the way damage mitigation is handled is quite different and really ties the whole system together, so I was a bit presumptuous. It's nice! A 1v1 combat system that managed to stay engaging all the way through, every time I got haughty and/or lazy I died for my hubris. Battle being entirely* dependent on gear and every chest containing such gear made every secret in a dungeon worth checking out and feel rewarding to do as it opened up a new puzzle piece to your battle strategy. Most importantly, the game's kinda funny, quite enchanting. You a'ight Helen, bring it in, dap me up. Side note for Steam Users with controller and window size issues: 1. Download EasyRPG, extract the ZIP 2. In another window, navigate to your folder where Helen's Mysterious Castle is located (...steamapps > common > Helen's Mysterious Castle > helen) 3. From the EasyRPG folder, copy "Player.exe" to the folde…

Quick fun adventure, the battle system is pretty creative.

A reasonably lengthy game for the price and a side content that is basically a short super dungeon. The story is interesting and tells about the creation of monsters in its world. The combat is 1v1 and you don't level your character but your equipments. There are some RPS and math involved during combat with "wait time" management, a bit of strategy is needed. Only bug I ran into was the end of the game dialogue visual bug. There is no "Game Over" state and you'll just respawn back at the floor's safe zone. There are plenty equipments to collect. There are a lot of hidden paths that'll leave you stump on how to progress or get the item that you saw. Odd there is no basic settings menu. But you can save anywhere outside of combat. Over all, 8/10.

https://youtu.be/bEX0M0XipKU Deliberately slow progression without any internal plot or motivation will quickly drain the motivation to move forward with this RPG.

Begins a little barebones with a great combat system, but it does tell a charming little story by the end.

This game plays much like an RPG Maker game, so in many ways it's exactly what it looks like, but the reason why this is one of my favorite games of all time is because of the battle system. It works on a tick-based system that stops tick progression on the player's turn so that you have time to think about how to counter the enemy's next attack. Weapon choice determines when your next attack will be, and you choose based on balancing attack, defense, and speed. I played this shortly after being released, back in 2017, and I'm not sure I'd play it now since there's an old-timey dungeon mechanic that is a bit tedious to get through. You can end up spending a lot of time walking back to where you left off, and while there's no random battles, that also means a lot of dungeon progression can hinge on avoiding enemies, which isn't very satisfying given the RPG maker 2D format, but if you're in the mood for an RPG and only care about interesting/compelling combat, this game still holds up.
