Released in 1995 by Taito, Layer Section is the home console version of the arcade game RayForce, a vertical shooting game.
Players control X-LAY, a mobile weapon equipped with lock-on lasers and battle against the Con-Human system for the survival of humankind.
You can also play Galactic Attack, the overseas release of Layer Section.
Enjoy the enhanced BGM of the home console game in stereo sound in this title.
The remixed main melodies are tastefully different from their arcade versions!
New useful features like game rewind, slow mode, and quick save have been added.
Compare scores with others in the new online ranking mode!
◆Lock-On Lasers
The game's main feature, lock-on lasers allow you to attack enemies on the ground or in low orbit.
Use your unit's cross hairs to lock on to enemies and fire lasers at them in one fell swoop.
Target up to 8 units at once. Destroy multiple enemies together for a higher score.
Destroy 8 enemies at once for a 128x multiplier!
Make full use of lock-on lasers to aim for higher scores!

Rewind gameplay a by certain amount of time and resume.
・Slow Mode
Slow game pace down with a single button press.
・Quick Save/Load
Save game state at any point.
・Online Ranking
Switch to online ranking mode in settings to enter your score into the online leaderboards and check how you compare with others.
・Stage Selection
Play your favorite stages with your favorite settings.
・Expanded Rapid-Fire Settings
Rapid-firing can now go faster than the original home console version (15/second -> 30/second).
・Coin Credits
Insert up to 99 credits and play at leisure without worrying about continues.
・Change Difficulty Increase Settings
Play at a constant minimum or maximum difficulty, which increases when certain conditions are met.
・Screen Orientation

Ikaruga and Radiant Silvergun are both better, but for sale around $12 It was a decent purchase for me as I like having as many arcade shooters as I can. Granted this isn't real arcade, but it's close enough, and a playthrough I did day one used more credits than the game cost me if I paid per credit in a real arcade. I think I blew well over 30 credits as I'm that bad on the game and I blew 10 credits the day before I wrote the review for fun. I wouldn't buy this game as the only arcade shooter, there are better ones, but on sale if adds to a solid collection.6 found this helpful
When booting this game up on Steamdeck I was a bit disappointed as the game didn’t seem to run at full speed and had awful audio glitching. I had a play around with compatibility and found that running Proton 7.0-6 and going into the in game options>screen settings and changing the windows size from full screen to 1920x1080 fixed all the issues. Annoying, you have to tinker to make it work but it got there. Happy shmuping!!2 found this helpful

There are obvious sound problems, but overall I've enjoyed it. Achievements require just beating the game, soundtrack is nice, stage 1 BGM is my favorite (although ruined by how it is played) I guess Ray’z Arcade Chronology version is better. This one is alright to get when it's on sale.1 found this helpful
It's a interesting piece of shmup history, but is still a basic and short game from 1995. It should be £$14.99 AT THE MOST. £$25.00 for this is a borderline scam.
Layer Section is fun, and with probably one of the coolest player ship designs, and cover art in the the history of SHMUPs. The gameplay is unique because enemies can change layer depth, requiring you to alternate attacking between standard shot and the lock on laser. It's challenging, but also rewarding. A must play for fans of this type of shooter.
