About Life Eater

✦ AI summary

Play as a suburban druid juggling a mundane day job with an ancient ritual that keeps the world from ending, hunting down specific victims using an innovative timeline interface to map their schedules and routines. Uncover deeply personal stories through a video editing-style system while racing against the clock to abduct your targets before discovery, blending intimate character knowledge with moral horror in a darkly inventive take on analog terror.

Life Eater is a horror fantasy kidnapping simulator. Play as a modern-day druid living in suburbia, holding down a dead-end job to pay for your true vocation: conducting the annual ritual that keeps the world from ending.

To delay the end of the world, you must sacrifice a number of specific - but vaguely-described - human beings every year. Use a video editing-inspired interface to discover the story of your victims' lives, one schedule block at a time. Pry into the most intimate details of your targets' schedules, and when the time is right: abduct them before the authorities can find your lair. Time is short and your list of names is long. Choose your options wisely... and pray that the dark god you serve is even real.

Features:

  • Use an innovative "timeline" interface for a new kind of analog horror game.
  • Get to know the unsuspecting targets of your town, intimately.
  • Replayable blend of authored and generated stories.
  • Fully voiced story mode featuring Xalavier Nelson Jr. and Jarret Griffis.
  • Original atmospheric soundscape from David Mason, the composer of DREDGE.
  • An additional Endless mode, featuring decades of procedurally-generated targets.

I finished the game in one sitting, in the dark, and sat there afterward not really thinking about anything, just aware of how easily "getting to know someone" and "getting ready to hurt someone" had started to look identical on screen. It's short. It's a little repetitive by the back half, and the organ-removal puzzles can punish you for one missed detail with a full restart, which stings more than it should in a game this brisk. But the friction is almost the point. You're never allowed to feel graceful doing this. Every sacrifice should cost you something to execute correctly, and it does. The voice actors are top tier, and the two of them build something genuinely uncomfortable together through a handful of lines: a captor and a captive circling something that resembles affection, except the game refuses to let you mistake it for one. That's what got me most. This is a story about an old, lonely man who kidnaps a college kid and grows attached to him, and it would have been so easy to let that curdle into a redemption arc, Stockholm syndrome dressed up as connection, the cage reframed as found family. Life Eater doesn't let you have that. Whatever warmth grows between Ralph a…

The mechanics are simple but definitely require you pay attention to important details. I appreciated that it was challenging, but not frustrating. I liked the stylized art and voice acting, story stayed engaging and I always appreciate multiple endings. Level select option makes it easy to go back and play through different parts of the story, including the ending. Definitely worth the price and endless mode is a nice touch.

I mean, it's like most people say. Amazing concept, super unique, great story too. Great music, although it's a little bit *too* similar to the music in Dredge, to the point I kept getting distracted by thinking "Wait is this just the music from Dredge?"; the composer is great but I feel like he repeated himself a bit here. Gameplay, however, is just not enjoyable. It's repetitive, boring, not particularly immersive. As well, the game really lacks a lot of polish. Like, the menus, subtitles, buttons, etc. are all in some bad default sans-serif typeface. Calibri or Arial or something. Literally even just a font change would have done a *lot* for the feel of the game. Icons and everything also just lack any real finish; the cutscenes are beautifully executed, but everything relating to the actual gameplay itself just looks cheap. Somebody in another review here said it feels like a "Newgrounds" game and, yeah, pretty accurate. In summary: amazing concept, great art and music, good voice acting and plot, mediocre gameplay, and very ♥♥♥♥♥♥ non-cutscene/non-"water the flower" (water the flower is such a great choice of phrasing BTW) visuals. I wouldn't even necessarily say I *dislike*…

The tutorial provided is not sufficient, and the information needed for the rituals is really confusing to obtain. After an hour I refunded the game. It's unfortunate, because the premise and the gameplay itself seems great, but it proved to be more frustrating than fun very quickly.

Soul-crushing experience. All the targets you murder have their own lifes, which you are forced to see. It feels incredibly cruel. The game has an interesting aatmosphere, but the gameplay loop gets repetitive very quickly. Due to your time being limited, you don't really get to "care" about most of the victims, and so their murder starts to feel less and less impactful. The game is fairly short, though there's an endless mode. I wish the main gameplay loop was just a tiny bit more engaging, it feels a bit like I'm just pressing a bunch of buttons until I find the right square. Overall it's a game that has a lot of care put into it. I recommend getting it on a sale.
