About Mainframe Defenders

✦ AI summary

Lead a squad of 4 prototype robots through a virus-infected research complex, repelling attacks and completing objectives while building powerful synergies from limited items and tactical abilities. Master diverse strategies from overheating enemies to debuff demolition, but stay adaptive because enemy squads are designed to counter predictable tactics.

MAINFRAME DEFENDERS

Tactical retrofuturistic strategy game. A computer virus has infiltrated the "Stargazer" research complex. Most of the robotic units are controlled by the virus. Lead a squad of 4 prototypes on a mission to defend complex mainframe. You'll have to repel assaults, destroy unit fabricators, download valuable data, clear infected nodes, and do more on your way to the deepest parts of the complex. Work with item limitations and drawbacks to build powerful combinations. Destroy your enemies with diverse tactics: overheat them, melt with corrosion, absorb damage, and return fire. But don't rely on a single strategy too much - enemies might have a way to counter it. But above everything else: defend the Mainframe!* RETRO STYLE: Graphics, inspired by 80s terminal PC with hybrid synthwave soundtrack.

* DIVERSE TACTICS: Cook enemy robots to death, bury them under your bullets, eliminate with a single powerful shot, or render your opponents useless with debuffs - this game is designed with a lot of viable strategies in mind.

* BUILD YOUR SQUAD: Similar to how in card games you have to build your deck, in Mainframe Defenders you have to combine different items with unique abilities, to create an unstoppable squad. Work with item drawbacks or double down on them, creating flawed, yet powerful build!

* UNIQUE ENEMIES: Enemy squad won't sit idle, though. Each unit has its own role in the squad and designed to counter certain strategies. Pick your targets wisely, or you will lose.

* PROCEDURAL LEVELS: Hand-made rooms are combined with procedural generation to create random levels. Missions have differing objectives, combined with unique mission conditions. Will you accept the challenge or avoid the unknown and risk falling behind?

* PROGRESSION SYSTEM: Victory or defeat, the game is not over yet! Unlock new units, each with a unique set of upgrades and load-outs. Unlock new items to bolster your new strategies.

Niche game. It is a little overwhelming at the start, but it can be ease into it.

8/10
TL;DR
Great challenging roguelite tactical game, that constantly builds time pressure and risks due to spawning enemies or stacking debuffs. The enemy variety is sufficient and requires a diversely build squad to counter all the different strengths of the enemies. Sadly the RNG of mission rewards and craftable items can screw a few of your runs. Furthermore some QoL features are missing. --------------------------------
Pros:

Overall look and feel

Soundtracks are banger
Visuals are simplistic but pleasing to the eyes
Good squad interface

Gameplay

Challenging
Simple but great combat
Good diversity of runs due to a vast amount of items and different characters(/mechs)
There is a decent strategical balance between time pressure and safe approach. Depending on the difficulty new enemies spawn in frequently until you destroy spawner or complete the main mission. This works actually incredibly well for this game and speeds up the runs while creating risks
Different difficulty require different builds
Certain items only work in synergy with others or with certain characters
Good select…

didnt play this for a while since it seemed like it would be a lot of work to learn, but its actually not too hard to figure out and is a really fun game once you do. complicated enough that i have to think, simple enough that i dont get a headache. my only real wish is that there were more mission types, as it gets repetitive really fast with most missions being mostly the same, but besides that its great

If you're considering this game because you like tactical squad games like XCOM or Into The Breach, this one is probably worth a try. None of the mechanics are particularly deep or emergent, but they all work well with each other, and learning how to cobble together optimal builds so they become essentially unkillable or do 100 damage per turn or apply every status effect under the sun is pretty fun. At 60-ish hours it feels like I've "completed" the game and that there's not really any very interesting new ideas to try, which is a pretty good deal for a $6 game. If you're considering this game based on its aesthetics, pretty much all of them are pulled directly from the 2017 roguelike Cogmind. The purple splats of Matter on the ground, the names of certain enemy units, the green terminal aesthetic, etc. are all the same, and in my opinion Cogmind does them better. That being said, if you don't want to spend days of your life being overwhelmed by one billion game mechanics, Mainframe Defenders is the far superior option. Of the two, this one is the rogue-like experience you want if you prefer the '-Like' part of that term more than the 'Rogue'. 8/10, I love you Vulcan B pls respo…

A lot of fun! For a roguelike nothing feels unfair/unfun even at higher difficulties. Honestly I rather enjoy how difficulty is handled, literally just how much damage gets done to you and stronger enemy types. Which means you can get used to how to tackle certain enemies and deal with the status effects they inflict on you on an easier difficulty. A really fun aspect of the game is the weapons and builds you can try to do. When things finally clicked that most guns suck until you build around their downsides it then quickly goes into having having overpowered weaponry and mowing things down. All that is to say the beginning of a run is the most difficult and gets easier as the run goes on. Super fun imo.
