About Meet the Miner - WDR VR Bergwerk

Ever worked hundreds of meters beneath the earth, bent down in dark, narrow shafts, hitting coal out of the walls? Probably not. Now you can: The WDR, Germany’s largest public broadcaster, presents the interactive VR experience “Meet the Miner – WDR VR Bergwerk”. With an Oculus Rift, users can experience how dangerous and grueling life of a miner was 100 years ago – feeling what it was like racing down hundreds of meters into the earth in a shaky elevator and mining coal with a virtual pickaxe. Something you will never be able to do in real life again. It is the highlight of a VR/360° project focussing on a dying tradition – the last German coal mines will be shut down at the end of 2018.

Meet the Miner - WDR VR Bergwerk is not a game. Games contain meaningful gamelike interaction and game loops, which are absent in this "art experience". Instead of being a game, Meet the Miner - WDR VR Bergwerk is a software application that presents a poorly made art exhibition. This is a lot of work that went into creating a VR "experience" (not game) where you can look around a mineshaft for less than 5 minutes. No real gameplay, only vaguely interactive... is this really the primary purpose of Steam? For VR "art" "experiences"?? It's true that games can be art... art is where the pinnacles of craftsmanship and quality meet vision and narrative to create an experience far greater than the sum of the parts. This isn't a game at all, and the craftsmanship and narrative are terrible. This isn't making art better, it's just making gaming worse. For those unfamiliar with what actually makes something a game, a "game loop" describes the interaction and feedback a gamer has when playing a game. Tetris, for example, has a game loop where a random block appears, the gamer interacts with the block to position it, and then the game decides if that finishes a row or not, increase…

Played on HTC Vive Pro/Vive wands/RTX2060Super It's a decent experience, a bit short maybe, and gives you a minor glimpse into what it was like in the mine. It ran pretty smoothly on my PC and it looked good. As it's free I can certainly recommend it to play it as it doesn't take much of your time.

"Meet the Miner - WDR VR Bergwerk" — погружение в атмосферу шахты с яркими визуальными эффектами и реалистичным звуком. Интерактивность и управление немного сложны для новичков, но после прокачки становится увлекательно. Игра сочетает образовательный элемент с приключениями, раскрывая историю угольной промышленности. Подойдет тем, кто ценит VR-опыт и интересуется историей. Минус — ограниченное количество заданий. В целом — достойная реализация для жанра.
