Old Thiess: The Werewolf’s Trial

Old Thiess: The Werewolf’s Trial is a really interesting little game because it takes an actual historical event and turns it into a strange mixture of courtroom storytelling, 2D platforming and fantasy action. I play as Old Thiess, a seventeenth century Livonian peasant who was accused of being a werewolf. During his testimony, I get to experience his version of what happened as he travels through Hell and fights demons and witches. I really liked how unusual the premise is because it gives the platforming a much stronger reason to exist. The platforming is the part I enjoyed most. The game has me exploring different areas while jumping across platforms, avoiding hazards and dealing with enemies. It is not an especially complicated platformer, but the movement fits the relatively short length well. I liked that exploration is mixed into the action instead of simply sending me from one fight to the next. There are also different environments and challenges across the circles of Hell, which helps keep the journey feeling like an actual adventure. Combat adds another important layer. Cool Werewolf game

I like the combination of gameplay where completing the flashbacks in different ways affect the outcome of each testimony. The story itself is also interesting, and the music pairs well with it. I also enjoyed the charm of seeing the text literally spelling itself out as it was spoken. This is a good free game, and sets up a solid grounding for future development. I did notice that some controllers work more efficiently than others. My Horipad controller occasionally had issues with getting enough jump height if I was also moving, but an XBox One controller did not encounter the situation in the same room.
