About Pandora: First Contact
✦ AI summary
Lead one of humanity's competing factions to dominance on the alien world of Pandora, researching technologies, building cities, and commanding armies while navigating hostile wildlife and rival settlers. Customize your units and playstyle through deep strategic systems including terraforming, trade diplomacy, and powerful military operations across diverse planetary biomes.
Pandora: First Contact is a science fiction 4X turn-based strategy game on a planetary scale.
In the future, factions have risen up from opportunities and ideologies independent of governments. Private corporations and religious movements have started wars over greed, ideology and power. Many have died and many lands lay in ruin. Planet Earth has been exhausted and colonial attempts on other planetary bodies have been in vain.
Finally, after decades of exploration, an interstellar probe has brought promise of a new world many light-years away. The most powerful factions have gathered their best men and women to send on a long journey to Pandora.
Far from desolate, the earth-like planet has been found to host a plethora of indigenous life forms. While the gigantic monstrosities inland and at the oceans seem relatively calm, human-sized bugs and fungus are threatening to stop mankind's expansion.
As the various factions strive to take control, each will research and develop numerous new technologies, discovering new weapons and industry, whilst opening trade agreements and forging alliances with other factions to gain a foothold. As they spread, they will discover ancient ruins from alien civilizations that will grant them advantages over their rivals.

I avoided this game for 12 years because of its Mixed Steam rating ... that was a big mistake! I have so much fun and it's becoming one of my all-time favorites, even beating Civilization Beyond Earth for me. People's main complaint is the aggressive AI, but I think it’s predictable: keep your military strong and factions will respect you; fall behind and expect a dogpile (yeah, even your most trusted ally will turn on you). Combined with randomized tech trees (!), deep unit customization (!!), and a strong Alpha Centauri vibe (!!!), the game is tense, rewarding, and underrated. Don’t let the review score scare you off. Although a fully competent 4X game at core mechanics, two things really hold it back - the lack of any meaningful constraints on city spam, and an AI that doesn't care about diplomacy and will declare war on you the second it makes a naive calculation that it can win. If you want to play this game in any way other than conquest, you're out of luck, because one of the AI will eat all the others, then through sheer size decide to go after you. Speaking of combat, it does a decent job evoking the mechanical spirit of Alpha Centauri, but in the process just manages to show off why 4X games have mostly moved on from this style of combat, which just makes the game's trigger-happy AI focus the game on its weakest aspect. It allows infinite stacking, but units attack out of and attack into stacks individually, so beyond shielding weaker ranged units there's little incentive to cluster up, because the game makes the poor decision to let you build an orbital strike per city on a short cooldown that hits every unit in a stack. This also makes invading incredibly difficult, since transport units can be destroyed by a single orbital strike, two tops. Ultimately, the greatest sin this ga…1 found this helpful
Pandora: First Contact, developed by Proxy Studios and published by Slitherine Ltd., is a turn-based 4X strategy game that builds its identity around colonization, adaptation, and conflict on an untamed alien world. Clearly influenced by earlier genre landmarks, it places players in control of one of several human factions sent to settle Pandora after Earth’s collapse, each carrying its own ideology and approach to survival. While the premise is familiar, the game’s strength lies in how it frames the planet itself as an active, often hostile force that resists being conquered. From the opening turns, the environment establishes itself as more than just a setting. Pandora is alive in a mechanical sense, populated by aggressive alien creatures that respond to expansion and resource extraction. Early gameplay revolves around cautious growth—securing territory, managing limited resources, and surviving encounters with native life that can quickly overwhelm unprepared forces. This creates a tension that is less about competing with other factions at first and more about proving that your colony can endure the planet’s hostility. It’s a strong foundation that gives the early game a sens…1 found this helpful
I normally don't post reviews, but can't sit on the sidelines for this one. Pros: * Great graphics * Friendly UI * 4X Cons: * Everything else Like many other reviewers have stated: the game is horribly unbalanced. The AI will have tech 4 times more advanced than you within 20-30 turns and then they free-for-all you the rest of the game. You no longer spend time growing and advancing - you are on the defensive, getting your arse handed to you at every turn. Your production and growth grind to a halt. Everything starts depleting and before you know it you've lost everything you've worked for. I walked away from the game for a while and thought I'd give it another try. I bought Eclipse of Nashira hoping maybe the devs balanced the AI. It was even worse. If you enjoy losing to AI that advances far faster than you do so that you eventually throw in the towel and are forced to give up: this game is for you. And as soon as you think you have a good game going that feels promising: just wait 10 more turns. That will change. If you prefer longer survival chances: stick with Civ: Beyond Earth. A more balanced AI would make this game great, but I just can't recommend it b…
This one of the greatest games of al time
Huge map is tiny. Real tiny. Don't expect much exploration. Aliens, more aliens, even more aliens. The AI cheats with the many hands of Vishnu. This is not a game. This is abuse. Firaxis did this better 30 years ago.
