About Pavlov's House
The goal of Pavlov’s House is to last until the defenders of Pavlov’s House are tasked with storming a key German strongpoint during the Battle of Stalingrad. In the game, this is depicted by playing through a deck of cards representing elements of the German 6th Army.
Pavlov’s House was a fortified apartment building used as a strongpoint by the Soviet 62nd Army during the pivotal Battle of Stalingrad in WW2. Soviet defenders – primarily from the 7th Company, 3rd Battalion, 42nd Guards Rifle Regiment of the 13th Guards Division - held out for almost two months from a constant German assault. The building’s name was drawn from Yakov Pavlov, a sergeant who led the initial storm group assault that resulted in the capture of the building from the Germans. The story of Pavlov’s House was a key piece of Soviet propaganda and was used as a symbol of the incredible resistance of Soviet forces during the Battle of Stalingrad.

Not a fan. Very swingy, which in a way makes sense for the type of game it is, but it's quite punative specifically due to the low amount of actions one gets. I find it very hard to believe that only 3 people can fire their weapons at any one time. For balance, I think it would have made more sense if the player had more action, whilst retaining how swingy it is. That way there's more agency in the defence action this game is modelling, but no guarantee that their men are quality marksmen, or that the Germans are merely performing well. It's based on the actual boardgame published by DVG, and their games are brutal by design, but I felt that this one was excessively so. If you like that kind of punishment, then ignore my complaint and give it a go. For $13AUD, it's a solid purchase.
This game is hard to win but there is so much appeal that I keep playing it. I read about the actual events in a book called Enemy At The Gates, by William Craig, and I have admired what the men did in this situation. I am not sure if the mechanics between the Signal units and the Fog of War card is correct, or if maybe the explanation is unclear. If all the Signal units have a token, it does open up an extra action, but I'm not sure how to clear a Fog of War card and draw another Soviet card. It just seems to skip your re-draw. Overall it is a lot of fun and good value for the dollar.
I guess this game had some updates that made the tutorial a stupid f-ing mess. And it seemed a decent game, too. Devs will f up anything to keep job security, I guess.
Just like playing the board game !
Replayable game with significant and deep tactical choices couched in a very simple setup. The Soviets have a variety of potential tactics for defending the house, and have to adjust accordingly based on what the card draw gives them. Essentially a resource allocation game, but one where the interactions of the available resources create many potential interesting combinations. I've played it dozens of times and only now do I feel like I am starting to understand all my choices.
Adaptation fidèle et bien réalisée du jeu de plateau. Un wargame solo excellent qui ne vole pas sa réputation, parties rapides, système bien pensé. Je n'ai pas rencontré de bug dans la version numérique, ce qui est notable pour le genre. Je recommande vivement.
