About Cauldrons of War - Stalingrad

From Crimea to Stalingrad and the Caucasus oil fields, lead the Axis or the Soviet forces in the bitter fightings of the eastern Front in 1942.

Cauldrons of War - Stalingrad is an immersive 'command at the highest level' wargame with tough decisions to make.
Its clean mechanics and low complexity allows the game to focus on what is really important : strategical decisions.
There is no micromanagement here, but more depth than you imagine.

Play the main operations in 1942 on the eastern Front :

As the German, will you grasp the Baku oilfields ? As the Soviet, will you trap a whole German army near Stalingrad ?

Play fast and often

: you don't need a 100+ hours investment in a monster game. Some scenarios can be played in 1 or 2 hour. But don't worry, the game contains several scenarios and is challenging enough to keep you entertained for a long time.

Play against the AI or against your friends

: with a hot seat mode and a Play By Email Mode

Cauldrons of War - Stalingrad is the second opus of the "Cauldrons series".
If ever you have played Cauldrons of War - Barbarsossa, you won't be disoriented, but you will notice some improvements here and there.

DISCLAIMER

This game is hard!

Try to follow these good strategy lines to win your first game:
-Define reachable objectives
-Focus your efforts on a clear direction
-Stop attacking when your units are exhausted
-Don't send vast armies in areas where you can't supply them

The German did all these 4 mistakes, that is why they lost.

If you keep losing, you must be German, (that is the best explanation).
If so, act like a real german general : blame Hitler!
(not yourself, nor the game)

Have fun!

Mechanically and narrative rich game, despite rather simple UI, which can scare off some players (but to be honest wargamers do already have very, very low standards for UI, considering they adore WDS titles). The core gameplay revolves around the army groups management and resource allocation with aim of capturing predifined objectives on the strategic map. Command Points act as currency, which can be used for various actions, from transfering units to ordering assaults. It's more on the narrative side of the wargaming and I would compare it to tabletop wargames, rather than hex-and-counter ones. Recommended to try if you: 1) Played Decisive Campaigns: Barbarossa for the events and found counter-shuffling was too tedious 2) Loved these interactive maps shown in the history class in school.

Cauldrons of War: Stalingrad is a highly detailed operational strategy game that recreates one of World War II’s most devastating campaigns through large-scale military planning, logistics management, and historically grounded warfare. Rather than focusing on cinematic battles or fast-paced tactical action, the game places players in the role of a high-level commander responsible for managing entire fronts, coordinating offensives, protecting supply lines, and making difficult long-term strategic decisions. The result is a deeply thoughtful and demanding wargame that prioritizes realism and operational depth above accessibility. Set during the brutal conflict surrounding Stalingrad, the game allows players to command either German or Soviet forces across massive operational maps representing one of the most important turning points of the Eastern Front. Every decision carries enormous weight because success depends not only on battlefield victories but also on maintaining logistics, preserving troop strength, and understanding terrain advantages. Unlike more simplified strategy games where armies can endlessly attack without consequence, Cauldrons of War: Stalingrad constantly rem…

Highly recommended! Just like CoW Barbarossa, a game that can be played in a realistic amount of time once you are an adult with real life responsibilities.

A fun and pretty well researched game, set during the eastern front campaigns of 1942. One session takes around 3 hours or so to finish. Had much fun as both Germans taking Stalingrad and reaching all the way to Baku, as I did with Soviets crossing the Dnieper a year too early. I reccomend greatly.

Death by a hundred paper cuts. Lots of different and fun scenarios. As usual with Maestro's games, the interface takes some time to get used to.
